Good overdrive pedal for boost...

I plan on buying a Classic 30 very soon (as soon as I can find a good deal on ebay) but the amp kind of lacks in the overdrive section. So I was planning on asking for Christmas, for some sort of overdrive pedal to boost it for solos. Some overdriven tones that I want are, SRV (of course), Eric Clapton (Cream years), and David Gilmours overdrive.

The only pedal that I have in mind right now is the Ts9. Any other suggestions?

Sparkle drive by voodoo labs (pssst... look in the trading post :) )

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

ts-9 or sd-1, prolly ts-9

I'm not sure how sd-1's do on boosting, and a ds-1 would probably be too british sounding

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

Look for a Dallas Rangemaster clone for Cream stuff.

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

I'm going to say a Sparkle Drive. I love the clean boost feature. Other than that, a modded TS-9 by Keeley. I have the baked mod on mine..... ALL KILLER

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

The overdrive on C30 ain't that bad! ;) Seriously, I have one and the only problem is that at high volumes it kinda farts with a LP. But it's ok with strats and teles. I think I'd have to get a good speaker, preferably Weber's California series, the clone of JBL d120.

If I were you I'd also think about getting a ds1 and sending it to John to taste his magic. My humble opinion is that SD1s (modded by him) sounds best on fender amps, and on c30 it does not sound that sparkling. I find my self boosting the highs all the time whenever I plug my sd1 into the c30. And I prefer c30's overdrive channel over the sd1+clean channel especially when I play with strats. But for cream stuff, DS1+C30's clean channel works great. I think DS1+a clean fender becomes sort of too screaming, and not that round in the highs department. That's why I have my SD1 and mesa boogie v-twin coupled with my fender blues jr., and ds1 with c30.

BOSS super overdrive is a good pedal if you want some grit put into the front end. I like my Ducan booster pedal. I used to use the super overdrive but I can get so much grind from my booster pedal.

Unless you want to spend a bundle, there are only two that I use and know well: Boss DS-1 or Ibanez TS-9.

I think the DS-1 is more versatile, especially if you like to rock.

If you're more of a blueser, like me, then maybe the SRV approved TS-9 would be better.

You can find either pedal used on Ebay for about $50 or less.

The Vox Valvetone is also a great little box for what you want to do .

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

Damn bro, me n u have the same taste it's scary. I traded in my marshall for a Classic 30 a month or 2 ago and put JJ tubes in it. The overdrive stock isn't so bad for leads, but with the blues set of JJ tubes it's really more for rythm stuff.

I use a TS-5 (basically a TS-9 aside from a few things) forum bro John (stratdeluxer) modded for me. I just turn up the level and tone and turn down the distortion and it makes an awesome boost pedal. Could be very SRV like if you have a strat. It'll end up costing you about 50-60 bucks if u get the pedal off ebay. (20 for the pedal + Mods)

I agree with these guys, any good Tubescreamer should treat you well.

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

Yep TS-9, as others have said. Send it to John, & yer all set. That will give you exactly what yo asked for, IMHO. Good luck.

Barber Direct Drive SS!! Similar to a TS-9 but much more flexible, true bypass, and built much, much better. And, IT'S CHEAPER THAN A TS-9 TOO!! www.barberelectronics.com

Cheers,

+1

Of course, for blues, nothing beats a tube screamer. I have a true bypass, absolute mint MJM Blues Devil for sale on the forums and that's the best tube screamer I have ever heard in my life (it's exactly like the old 808s). If I didn't have my end all pedal: the Pro Analog Dual Drive, I'd keep it.

Barber makes quality pedals. The DDSS can emulate TS9 tones to a certain degree, but it's versatile enough to do other stuff as well.

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

Well I play blues, blues/rock, and some funk, but I think I'm going to go with the Ts9. And who knows, I might send it off to StratDeluxer in a couple months...I've only heard good things. :burnout:

Why go with a copy of a Tube Screamer if you can buy the real deal? I Love both the TS9 and the 808....Contact me if and when you wanted your's modded....It just kills the stock Tube Screamer..

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

TS9 is a good idea... you can also try a Boss SD-1. The SD-1 is less subtle than the TS9..... try both pedal and you'll see what I mean.

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

My thoughts on the SD-1 vs. Sparkle Drive:

I thought the Sparkle Drive was a bit cleaner and clearer with greater overall tone retention. I tried a SD-1 for about a week or so and couldn't dial it in-it seemed to reduce the bass response.

DS-1 and SD-1 pedals can be found for about $40-50 online and the Sparkle drive will be about 110 or so-I've seen them as low as $95 USD.

I am also intrigued by John's pedal mods' solid repute...

Hope you find what you're looking for!

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

The Super Overdrive def will cause a loss in in low end and add some midrange. Which I personally like for certain guitars. I prefer the Tubescreamer for otheers.

I'm not familiar with the current "high end" pedals or the modded "classics", but I think the "stock" tubescreamers and Boss SD-1 are excellent boost pedals with Marshall type amps. I suspect they'd do well with the Classic 30, if the tone is similar to the Delta Blues Peavey I played through last week (and my understanding is they are very similar). I was thinking when playing it that a Tubescreamer would add the little bit of high end sizzle and gain I thought was a little lacking from the amp.

And I'm sure SD's modded versions would be even better.

Re: Good overdrive pedal for boost...

I'm gonna go out in left field here... i just LOVE modded BD2 Blues Drivers. They're so versatile and i can easily get in the ballpark of the tones you mentioned with combined pedal and amp tweaking. BD2's tend to sound a little more "rangey" than TS and SD stuff does... lower and tighter bass, slightly pulled mids and higher, crisper highs that can still get smooth when you want them to. I love that pedal.
