Good studio monitors

OK, I've decided on the following gear for my home recording setup:

Shure SM-57 + Studio Projects C1 condensor mic into an MBox.

I figure that should be sufficient to get me a clear and great sounding quality recording.

Now, I need some monitors... I'd like some powered ones, as it's more convenient for me (however, if someone wishes to argue strongly against this choice, I'll listen. :) )

I don't want to pay more than $400 for two, so again, if they're $500 new but can be found used for $400, that's within the price range. :)

What's most important is that they're very neutral and flat sounding, so the mixing can be done accurately.

Cheers!

Monitors are a personal thing, kinda like picking a pair of shoes.

Go listen to a bunch of 'em.

Bring a bunch of CD's along for the trip. For me it's always stuff that I've recorded & stuff that I dig the sound of.

I'll listen to everything in a given store and either I love 'em or hate 'em within 30 seconds. I'll listen to a bunch of music on the ones I like & eventually I'll narrow it down to a set that I DO like a lot. Those are usually the ones that reveal the greatest detail in the music...letting me hear things that are covered on other speakers. High end smoothness & fatigue, low end transparency are huge...midrange detail to sort out guitars & vocals are important too.

Listen to EVERYTHING.

Speakers are speakers. Most of the time.

A lot of mastering studios & mix AE's use audiophile speakers that you can't find in the "pro audio" department at Guitarget. Active or passive...personally I dig passive because if something blows up I can keep working without sending a whole box back for repair. Minimal downtime. Dig it.

I'd also recommend Yamaha's AND M-Audio BX-5's and BX-8's, very reasonably priced and sound amazing!
