Good tuners, for a Peavey Predator Plus?

Well,

as I now have; 1 electric solidbody, 1 electric hollowbody, 1 western and 1 nylon (and 1 fretless bass...);

I've come to that, I have enough guitars.

-Instead of buying a new one; I want to upgrade the ones I got. My Peavey with SSS pickups, is a great axe; it's got ...well, just about everything I want.

But! The tuners are cheap, and I'd like to upgrade them.

Which tuners would be a good choice, following these criteria:

-Not too expensive;
-No special functions, i.e. locking, - just simple, good ones
-Not too heavy; as it's a small guitar (with a 26" scale! :o )

I think the GFS brass tuners look mighty nice. But, I'm unsure if the brass and weight, would add to the tone/guitar in a positive matter, or not...

...the most important, is that the guitar is easy to tune, and stays in tune! :) .

I want to install a 10-way freeway switch, and maybe some custom colouring to the pickguard, later on.

There are several that meet your criteria, but I'm not sure they'd be much of an improvement:

But if you want a really great upgrade get these. They are a definite improvement, but they are locking, self-trimming, and more expensive. Money well spent if you want an upgrade. I don't think you'll see any advantage to the brass tuners.

Is it a 3/3 or Straight 6 arrangement?

My preference for 3/3 are Grover Rotomatics or the high end Gotohs -and for 6 straight Schaller or Sperzel lockers are by far my favorite.

Those in my experience are the best tuners.

And BTW tuner ratio means pretty much nothing as long as they are at least 10:1 - super high ratio are unnecessary for a guitar tuning -the real thing is the gearing quality, stability and feel when you use them -thats the mark of machining and matching quality in the build process.

My favorite tuner in general are locking Sperzels either 3x3 or 6 inline, though they're not a great fit for every guitar. If weight is an issue I like Gotoh SD90/91s, otherwise I've had great luck with Gotoh SG301/360/380s (similar tuners, but different sizes). Schaller and Hipshot make really nice hardware, but it tends to be expensive. My luck with Grover and Ping has been far too inconsistent to recommend those.

Even basic offbrand tuners work well these days.

But what is the specific issue with your current tuners? Tuning issues are almost exclusively the nut. I mean I've seen $50 nylon acoustics that do have dodgy enough tuners to not hold tune, but generally most electrics of the current day don't suffer from that issue.
If they are mechanically unsound and you have no way of inserting lube due to them being fully sealed than you might get an improvement with new models. Other than that you are merely sidegrading.

it is a 3+3.

The stock ones are, rather lightweight (tin?!), and rattly; not the very best.

-Thank you all for the replies. I wil read again later on; when I'm not in this hurry! :) (To the dentist!) =)

Rock on!!

I put a set of these on a beater I have about a year ago: https://www.thomann.de/gb/kluson_ms33c.htm. Very nice - good ratio and hold pitch well.

I guess they're just Kluson branded sealed tuners which many other use, but they nice, and transformed the guitar, which originally had the very generic individual plate tuners whose gears are covered by a cap (i.e. rubbish).

I thought the Peavey Predator was a 6 in-line.

As Mincer suggested, I also have had great success with Hipshot tuners, I love their open locking tuners.

GuitarDoc: It might be a "Raptor Plus" I got. It's a small guitar, 26" scale, with a little headstock! thin C-neck, with huge frets. A joy to play, it really sings! :)

I love the single coil bite, and "hot-rodded strat" sound. Though I'd love, better tuners, and maybe a differnet pickup in the middle position.

=)

Any chance of posting a pic? 26" is 1/2" longer than Fender scale and 1 1/4" longer than Gibson scale. Doesn't sound like a "small" guitar. (Or any Peavey I've ever heard of.)

It is, actually, 26". I thought it was a ... 24"?! at first, because of the small body & headstock.

Really cool guitar; made out of pressed sawdust body! ;) ... with bar magnet, large pole piece- pickups.

Thanks for the tip ;). I measured 26" with correct intonaton... though.

It is a great guitar. Just tried my Wildkat Koa lmt.ed. 2016! :D. A "totally different beast" ;). Which, I want to install a third middle pu./coil in. (GFS surface mount?) ;) ...

=)

I put a set of GFS locking tuners on my black Tele for a temporary fix when I did the build. 10 years later they are still on there and working great. I have had no reason to take them off.

I wish my experience with the GFS Locking Tuners was that positive. I had a set on a partscaster Tele about a decade ago, and only four (of six) locking mechanisms actually worked. I had to wind around the post on the other two tuners.

These were the one; I was considering investing in. They do look very nice; (though, maybe a bit heavy for the small headstock?!)

:)

If you're in the EU you may be able to get a set of Schaller M6s without spending a fortune. They're great tuners and longcat has a set on her Les Paul. I'd use them more often, but they're really expensive in the US.

Any Hipshots I ever got were great. That is locking or non-locking. They are lightweight, too and not very expensive.

My favorite has always been Sperzel locker BUT I think they're a little heavy for some guitars.

I just got a set of Hipshot lockers that I havent tried but they weigh much less than the Sperzel's. I might put them on something this weekend.
