Good video series on learning improv from scratch?

My son wants something to do over the summer and decided to learn to improv on guitar. My method I learned to improvise was learning my scales and just picking up little tricks over the years.

Is there a video series somewhere that can teach him from scratch how to improvise while I'm at work and I can supplement with my own knowledge?

If he is serious, check out John McLaughlin's 'This is the Way I Do It', which came out a few years ago, and it is super deep.
