Got a custom shop 59 - what's the deal?

Hi guys,

First post. Hope I'm welcome :) I've been scanning the forum for some time. I like it here.

Anyway, I just made a trade and got an SH-1N from the custom shop. I've attatched som photos of it. It's a SH-1N (the sticker on the back says 59N) with nickel cover. I guess it's Maricela who's made it. But I don't know why it's a custom. Is it the output maybe? The seller didn't really know. Seems to be an Alnico 5, 7.85k DC. From 2003.

It's going in my Les Paul tonight together with an 59/Custom hybrid. Guess that I'll like it. I love the 59 in the neck of my SG.

At 7.85k, it's a hair hot for a '59N... that may be the Custom Shop part of it...

Should be a pretty sweet pickup man! Sounds like you made a good trade. As jt said, it's a bit hotter than a standard 59 which means it should be a great match with your 59/C bridge!

I'm happy to hear :)

I tune in B standard, and the SH-5 + SH-1N in my SG sounds great. Hopefully this will be killer too. I'll upload some clips when I've set the guitar up, for curious people. I know myself that there's a lack of clips of low tuned clean guitars. So I'll be happy to provide some.

MJ used to (and probably still does) wind quite a few "stock" pickups. Similar to having the chef/owner of a restaurant personally make your dinner. There may be nothing tangibly different about it but sometimes it's nice to know that The Custom Shop performed all functions start-to-finish.

Re: Got a custom shop 59 - what's the deal?

The pickups does not belong to the box IMHO. The pickup should carry custom decal (with the serial number?) and different baseplate.
My best guess is someone ordered a CS with 7.85 and yanked out his standard 80ies 59N. So you got a regular 59 in a CS box?

When you get a chance, throw a multimeter on it, make sure it reads as advertised.

I bought a '59BJ bridge wound to 11.35k, once...

That one broke the laws of physics, eh? I mean, the most 42 gauge wire you could get around the bobbin would read a little north of 9K, right?

Re: Got a custom shop 59 - what's the deal?

thats not totally true. with a really tight wind you can get 11k+ but 10k is a good upper limit

If anybody asked, I was just gonna say MJ had missed her coffee that morning, fell asleep at the wheel...

In all seriousness, double check that pup when you get home, OP - make sure it is what they say it is.

Re: Got a custom shop 59 - what's the deal?

a machine winds them so unless mj hit the start button once it automatically stopped it shouldnt be out of spec. my guess is she measured the pup then wrote the resistance on the package.

as far as 10k of #42, look at the brobucker. 10k with mistatched coils, one is a little under 5k, one is a little over. take the two over 5k coils and you end up with a little under 11k. i bought four on the initial run and did just that, a double screw thats about 9.5k and a double stud thats about 10.5k. personally i like the 9.5k double screw better but im sure some would like the 10.5k double stud better

I'm pretty sure (99.9999999999%) mine is an MJ someone else rewound, instead of sending it back for repair.

Hi guys

I sent an email to Seymour Duncan, forgot to attach a photo of the pickup though. But I'm on it. Sounds nice anyway. And I did not trade it because it was a custom shop, but because it was an SH-1N. So I'll keep it anyway :)

Hey, if you like how it sounds, that's what matters...

Absolutely. It sounds as good as I expected and it doesn't matter if it's a custom shop or not. Just got curious. And I'll keep it anyway :)
