Just picked up a beautiful MIM James Burton Telecaster! These are wonderful guitars with jumbo frets and a neck that reminds me alot of my old '54. Mine came with a set of Lindy Fralin Blues Specials! But that's the set I already use in my '54 Tele....so:

What pickups would you guys like to see compared to the Blues Specials?

I have the Duncan Jerry Donahue, Alnico Pro 2, Antiquity Tele and also a set of Fender '51 Nocaster pickups I can put in my new Tele.

I'll let you guys decide. Tell me which ones you'd like me to check out for you.

Thanks! Lew

It sounds almost just like my '54! Which blows my mind...my '54 has the same Fralin pickups but is 50 years old, light weight ash and has the three brass saddle vintage bridge. The James Burton has the same pickups but has an alder body and has the newer 6 saddle bridge! But they sound almost identical.

I'm leaning towards trying a set of the Antiquitys in the JB...or the Fender NoCaster set.

cool, Lew!
I know you've been wanting a new test bed!

honestly, I'd like to hear your comments on the AII-Pro's. I'm sure they've been discussed here, but it seems like there are always more comments regarding the JD and the other vintage pups than the AII-Pro's.

Duly noted! I'd like to hear those too. I did buy this ax as a test bed, but it's going to get played alot too! Anyone looking for a nice inexpensive Tele really should check out the MIM James Burtons...you can find them used used for under $400! Even the stock Texas Tele pickups sound very good. Mine's candy apple red...a perfect match for my candy apple red MIJ '57 RI Strat! Lew

I would leave those pickups in it.

I love the Blues Specials...but I have them in my other Tele. I bought this one as a "test bed" for new pickups that I haven't tried before. Thanks! Lew

Re: Got a new Tele!

nice guitar lew. i will be interested in any of those pickups you decide to test.

I already know what the antiquities sound like.

Re: Got a new Tele!

Lew, you got me interested buddy.

This guitar seriously sounds like your '54? How are the necks on them? Are they thin like the Lite Ash Teles?

That guitar looks great and the price is right, so I'm contemplating now ;) :D

It really does sound very similar. And so is the neck profile. Not really a V or boatneck...kinda like a boatneck but more rounded or oval. Very nice! Not a thin or skinny neck at all...just right, IMO. Lew

Re: Got a new Tele!

Killer tele, Lew. Candy apple red, I presume?

I'd love to hear the Jerry Donahue or Antiquity.

Re: Got a new Tele!

I have a Nocaster set in a limited edition American Custom Tele and they sound great to me -- nice smooth and smokey vintage neck pickup and a sweet bridge pickup wtih great midrange tone. In another American Tele, I have a nocaster bridge paired with an SD mini-humbucker (SM-3n) at the neck, and they sound great together, too. The latter Nocaster bridge pickup has more bite to it than the first one, but I suspect that reflects the different resonance of the two guitars (both ash bodies with 1-pc maple necks, but a bit different sounding unplugged). If you want something leaning toward Roy Buchanan that is probably a little different from the Fralins, then I think the Nocaster set would be a good choice.

BTW, it's nice to hear that the Burton Tele is so nice and that it has jumbo frets -- I thought they had vintage fret wire. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one, as I'd like an alder-bodied Tele in my collection.

I think you'd like it. The frets are not gigantic...but they are taller and wider than those on the Nocaster and 52 RI. Makes string bending alot easier, and personally, I think larger frets add a little mass or something to the neck and make it sound better. Take care! Lew

Re: Got a new Tele!

Lew-

I'd personally like to hear the blues special neck vs. antiquity; and the JD vs. Antiquity. (and a P-90 vs. Blues Special)

Thanks for the trouble.

Re: Got a new Tele!

As someone who is considering Antiquities for a Strat project I'm working on, I would love to hear about that comparison - I live in Richmond, Lindy Fralins home town, and so I am also considering those. I know yours is a Tele but teh comparison would be intersting all the same. Thanks Lew and enjoy!!
