Got gas for a Jazz

Jazzmaster that is. Out of nowhere i've for some reason wanted a Jazzmaster and also wouldn't mind a Jaguar as well. How would you guys describe the Jazzmaster pups since they are their own thing tonally? The crazy part is I would actually use them for what they were intended as guitars for Jazz. Just put on some flats and let it rip and it has vibrato which is always a plus in my eyes.

Re: Got gas for a Jazz

You might consider a Blacktop series because they have real P90's. The Jazzmaster pickups are bit odd.

Re: Got gas for a Jazz

my dream guitar right now is a jazzmaster and nearly every week I have to talk my self out of selling my Am. Std. strat to fund it.
I think they sound cool as hell with the regular pickups.

Re: Got gas for a Jazz

The Squier JMascis JM sig is killer, check a few out when you can. The pups are closer to P-90's than a trad JM pickup,a little more grit to them. Not sure that'll exactly be your jazz tone but with the Rhythm circuit you'll have no issues.

Re: Got gas for a Jazz

A friend of mine has an original 1964 Jazzmaster that he "loaned" me to do a setup on- it was all original, aside from a refret. I loved the tone, especially with high gain (though it was noisy)- sounded a lot like Kurt Cobain.

Except for maybe the pickups- even the squires are greatly improved over the original. The 64 neck needed to be heavily shimmed, whereas now the neck pockets are routed on an angle, and the bridges tend to be a tune-o-matic- much more stable than the original design that was sloppily held in by the strings.

I'm really digging the Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster and Squire J. Mascis

Re: Got gas for a Jazz

The nomenclature was (and still is) a marketing failure. The musical genre in which the Fender Jazzmaster is most conspicuously absent is jazz.

Re: Got gas for a Jazz

That one has a SD vintage in the bridge because the original broke. Very smooth sounding pickup although I have nothing to compare it to
