Got my 5150 II

The guy didn't play much anymore so I got a sweet deal and its in good condition. I brought it back to my friends house (our practice area) and hooked it up to my Line 6 cab. I didn't get to play it much or very loud because it was late, but the first impressions are very good. It has awesome metal tone that is articulate, clear and cutting. The palm mutes sound brutal and the leads are amazing. I can't wait to try it out at band practice on wednesday.

Anyone have any advice? What settings do you guys use with your 5150s? Anyone use pedals in front of their amp?

edit- also the line 6 cab has two 8 ohm jacks. The amp should be set on 4 ohms correct?

stereo cab? does one jack say for "mono only?" if yer running in stereo using both of the amp's outs into both of those cab inputs, yeah 4 ohms. if only using one of 'em, 8 ohms. But don't listen to just me, make sure from an expert -- I'd be bummed if you blew something up cuzza what I say.

do you down-tune a lot? high-output pups? if so, you may want to try it the way Virtual_Kevorkian does it ... mild amp settings with an OD pedal in front.

me, with moderate output pups and no pedal, I dial everything to about 7, mids on 3, post on 3.5 usually. eventually I creep up the gain (pre) and presence little by little to 8, cuz I'm not right in the head. then I back off the treble to 6. ....then the mids and bass starts moving up....and I start using my guitar volume more....then the resonance starts creeping up. Then the post starts going up and everything else starts getting turned down. As with any amp like this, the louder I want it the more I turn down all the EQs and gain settings. For a bedroom volume (post on 1.5 or less), everything on 8, mids to taste.

I completely scoop channels 1 and 1.5.

don't listen to me. Virtual_K thinks I'm nuts. But anyway, he's got a lot of time invested with these amps. He'll chime in eventually I'm sure.

I don't want to speak for him but I *think* he likes these amps for their power section moreso than the preamp, and I like them for the compressed high-gain of the preamp and the flutey lead sounds. And yeah, the 6L6s sound good too.

again, I am just an airhead rock punk metal dolt.

to me the celestion line 6 speakers are very thin sounding at high volumes so you may have to adjust the amp alot during band practice.

check the line 6 website on how the cab is wired. dont want to fry your transformer

I got the ohm thing figured out, I had it right. As for a footswitch, will any work or do I need one from peavey? My friend has a two button footswitch from a marshall combo. It works for my bassist's GK amp but havent tried it yet on the 5150 II.

Where would the pedal go? I've got effects loop send, and return in the back. I've also got a jack to the preamp.

Re: Got my 5150 II

any 2 button footswitch should work.....I have a Randall Century 170, and a Crate BV120HR......ones a channel select/Effects Loop Select....the others a Channel select/Reverb select.....my crate 2 button footswitch works fine on both.

Re: Got my 5150 II

No... the 5150II uses a 3-button, 7-pin DIN footswitch. Gotta use either an XXX, JSX, or 5150II controller with it.

My settings are usually like bass at 7, mids at 2, highs at 3, resonance at 7, presence at anywhere lower than 7, it all sounds the same. Gain at 3.5-4 with a tubescreamer in front, using an 81 or 85 in the bridge, depending on the axe.

Not a big fan of Line6 cabinets... I like the stock 5150 cabinets and Mesa oversized cabinets best with these heads.
