Got my King of Tone letter today!

I put my name on the list last July and just got the e-mail tonight that I can order whenever I'm ready. With changing jobs, I'll probably wait until middle of next month to order it, but I can't wait!

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

The King of Tone waiting list sounds like the biggest bunch of gear hype nonsense ever invented by a boutique company.
It's so ridiculous, yet brilliant.

I still wish I had one though, just because I have a collection of the most sought after OD's in history. LOL

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

yeah, just REEKS of snobbery... Dear Sir, after a thorough credit check and reviewing all of your references, we now grant you permission to order one of our pedals. Please be advised however, that any future purchases of any mustard products other than Grey Poupon, or carrying any carrying of cards other than Platinum, could render you vanquished from the list and in the event delivery of your King of Tone has already occurred, it will publically declared as a forgery.

Are these pedals really special?? Im not familiar.. Congrats on your acceptance!

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

I am an inpatient SOB and I believe in a holy grail pedal about as much as I believe in Santa Claus and the Easter bunny. So, probably the only way I would get on a long-a$$ waiting list for a pedal is if it guaranteed me entry through the Pearly Gates. I've waited a month or so for some audio related kits and a couple months for some holsters and that was too long for the impatient SOB that I am. None of this is meant to be disrespectful to Analog Man or critical of the OP or anyone else willing to wait for a pedal. In fact, I wish I had that type of patience. It's just not me.

Congrats on notification and honestly hope you find it worth the wait.

I think they do the waiting list and limited supply because people were re-selling them with jacked up prices.

I am not a fan of waiting lists in general but am not going to knock anyone for getting.

Has anyone tried a King of Tone pedal? I've tried many boutique pedals that were awesome but I've also tried super cheap pedals that were awesome too...

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

Side track but the best marketing thing I've seen late is from Fulltone. He's having blem sales quite often. People are buying direct from him. No middle man margins. Drives sales and from what I and other experience, there is no blemish to be found.

Like clockwork lately.

I ain't gonna lie. My Fulltone solid state tube echo was one of these blem sales.

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

I don't really know much about a King of Tone. I kinda stay out of a lot of the gear hype thing.

Yeah, I got that email as well. I get his emails all the time and just delete them. Great pedals... but when I want one I go out looking for one and buy it. Spam rarely ever inspires me to buy.

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

the kot is a great pedal. i had one for a while but sold it at cost to a good friend of mine who needed some serious tone help. he still uses it and loves it. the three different modes are cool, i preferred the "clean" mode best but it has lots of output when you roll the gain all the way up like i liked so works best into an amp that is on the edge of breakup or you get a big volume boost. the overdrive modes and distortion modes are good too. the overdrive mode is similar to a tweaked bluesbreaker.

demand is high and they only make XX of them. the prices people ask for used ones are silly. the price for a new one is fair as far as im concerned

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

Yes, KOT is as good as advertised. Of course nothing is the perfect pedal, and sticking it between a cheap Guitar and Amp isn't going to do anything. With my amps at edge of breakup and my Guitars with great pickups it simply gives you "more" of the amp without color. It was based off the Bluesbreaker, just like most other overdrives are based on the Tube Screamer.

For anyone curious, you could try a prince of tone, which is a mass produced single side of the pedal, to see if you want to wait for the full deal or if it's not for you.

Also, IMO, Analog Mike Pierra is the best in the business. He's been doing pedals since most of these boutique startups were in middle school.

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

I was on the list for about 15 months. I've always kind of wanted one, so I put my name on the list last year. I figured I'd sit through the list, order my pedal and if I didn't like it, I could flip it for at least what I paid for it. It's a no risk scenario. And I'd rather wait 12-15 months than pay ~$400 for a used one.

I got the opportunity to play one through my amp earlier this summer and it sounded great. I ran my Archer into the front of the KoT and had it set up with the OD first and Clean second. It was heavenly. The sound of all three stacked together was amazing.

I don't view the list as snobbery, it's supply and demand along with time management. If Mike were to try to match the demand for King of Tones, he'd either be building them 24/7 or have to mass produce them. Since I doubt he wants to do either of those things, it's a brilliant strategy to manage the workload, and has the side benefit of raising the mystique of the pedal and generating more demand.

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

It's a blues breaker pedal right?

It's based on an original blues breaker, but has been so heavily modified its become its own thing.

The King Klon pedal I bought recently is based on the KoT. The left side is supposed to be a complete copy of the KoT but with the internal dip switches moved to external toggles but the builder didn't just want to make an identical clone of the KoT so he used a Klone for the right side. The only difference was he changed the taper of the gain knob to make it so the gain increased more steady and gradual.

When I ordered a Fulldrive 3 from Sweetwater, I asked for a break on price. My helpful "sales engineer" explained that Fulltone doesn't permit that sort of thing.

Great pedal, though. Seriously. And not really that expensive to begin with.

@RodneyGene was saying this morning on another forum that the Prince was one of his best "out of the box" experiences.

Re: Got my King of Tone letter today!

I don't think the list is snobbery as much as it is there is only one or maybe 2 guys building them and orders are coming faster than they can keep up.

That said, there does seem to be snobbery among those who got their KoT... Not everyone, mind you. But there does seem to be a few people with an elitist attitude toward the fact they got their hands on one.

I wouldn't have the patience to wait that long. If the KoT side of my King Klon is as accurate as it's supposed to be though, that is one monster of a pedal and I totally see why there is a wait list. Even my King Klon suffers from being unobtainable to most. Builder is closing up his operation and has only made 10 to 20 of most of his pedals... Some, probably less than that.
