Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

i totally agree...i started out with really thin picks and gradually moved to thicker ones and my tone steadily improved as well...now i use dunlop nylon 1mms...i do keep telling myself to try those jazz picks that everyone here raves about though!?

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I tried that out a week ago myself...after almost always been playing with fender medium...I found a fender heavy pick in my wallet. It really fatten the sound...good if you wanna play something heavier with singlecoils but still not use too much gain.

I also got a "Dava" pick when I order George L cables recently. Quite different to play with...in a good way. Acts like both a medium and a heavier pick...it depends on how you hold it.

Should go buy some more heavier picks...just to try out :)

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I recently discovered a problem. I hate playing those thick purple stubby picks. They slip all over the place and get in the way, but they sound amazing. My sound gets so much bigger and more articulate with those picks.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

I totally agree that picks are a quick and cheap way to change not only your tone, but the way you approach your playing. I started off with Dunlop Gator Grip .96's (purple), then switched to Dunlop Tortex .88's (green) for a couple years, and now I insist on Tortex .73's (yellow). My changes in picks pretty much correspond to changes in my playing style over the years.

Also, try fingerpicking once in a while! It's a great way to keep your chops up and add some variety to your playing.

Re: Great Bang For Buck Tone Change

1.14mm Gator Grips for me. Used the 2mm before but found them a bit too thick. The 1.14 is still very stiff but simply feels better in my hands. Didn't notice a huge tanal variety between the two though.

The one that got me was actually just last night. I've had the acoustics out a lot lately, and I've always thought that I prefered super thin picks on acoustic, especially for strumming. They didn't last very long at all though, often breaking in two. I was playing an arpeggiated section and my thin pick felt sloppy, so I picked up one of the Eric Clapton picks my friend gave me (no idea what size, but it feels like a fairly typical medium pick). Man, not only did picking feel 100 times more solid, the notes really seemed to jump from the guitar. It's times like that when you stop and wonder why you didn't think to make that change sooner.

This has been said before, but it's so easily overlooked and worth repeating.....

TRY SOME DIFFERENT PICKS!! :D

I grabbed a blue (1 mm) Tortex instead of the usual orange (0.6 mm) for band practice last night. Wow, what a difference, I was really cutting through, and hitting notes more positively. Bigger sound all around, really brought things to life. Gonna order me some more blues! :)

Forget that new boutique amp you've been gassing for, buy a new pick instead and spend the rest of the money on the lady in your life! :newangel:

Yah, I totally agree. I recently switched to tortex 1.5mm for the same reason.
