Great video of comparison between the JB and Duncan Distortion

I'm not much of a metal player, but I stumbled upon this and thought this was a fair and quality comparison of the JB and Duncan Distortion in more distorted, heavy settings. Apparently, it is a mahogany guitar straight into a Peavey 5150.

Personally, I think the JB sounds much better. In fact, I'm very impressed with the overall versatility of the JB. It seems to fit be able to fit in almost any musical setting from the heaviest metal to crunchy blues/rock.

Just thought it was worth sharing, take a look.

The difference is definetly in the mids, JB has them peaky thing in the upper mids. That peak sounds great in solos but also gives this hissy frequency which can drive you nuts when you try to remove it.
I preffer the Distortion but with an A8 ha!
Great comparison, thanx for posting it.

I liked the JB better. The mids just sounded better although the Jb lacks bottem end.

Now I can watch it.

EDIT: Great playing, dude. Seriously.

The Distortion fits the Metallica and the Dokken better, and both seem kind of out of place for Pantera. The Distortion is very much in your face, while the JB shows a little more crunch. I think that whole upper mid thing is very apparent in this video. Also the quick run in Livin' on a Prayer sounds quite a bit better with the slight bit of give that the JB has.

If you like the JB but want a tighter chunky bottom, the jB 8 is great.

If you like the Dunc Dist but want some upper mid JB flavor, the Dunc Dist lite with a regular ceramic is also great.

BUT the double ceramic of a Dunc Dist really does deliver the sheeer chuggg!
And the JB lead tone and upper mid growl also sells itself. I wish I could play rhythm w the DD and leads on the JB by flicking a switch.

Re: Great video of comparison between the JB and Duncan Distortion

can anyone tell me if the JB and DD really are the same wind only with the different mags? On that clip they both sound similar but the DD has a lot more presence and bite. the JB is warmer/creamier which a alnico 5 would do

Re: Great video of comparison between the JB and Duncan Distortion

I put an A5 in my DD & found it indistinguishable, short of doing a scientific A/B test. Only the Duncan winders know for sure, yet it seems to have been reported that if theyre not identical, it is slightly different to adjust for mass of coils or magnet strength or some reason of pickup science....

Re: Great video of comparison between the JB and Duncan Distortion

I believe it was MJ that confirmed they are very close but are not, in fact, the same wind.

Re: Great video of comparison between the JB and Duncan Distortion

So where would a JB8 fit in tonewise? Since an A8 is close to a ceramic, would a JB8 be between the 2 tonalities we heard here on this excellent demo?

the A8 in a JB sounds too metal for me? no matter what i did the JB would be too extreme for the sweeter tones its original RC5 gets.

Re: Great video of comparison between the JB and Duncan Distortion

I tried a DD8, and it was a lot like the DD but with just a little bit more Alnico sag and a touch looser on the bottom end. Again, the DD is so tight that I'm not saying much, but it was an all-out metal pickup still. I agree with Ed that A8 in that wind (and I'm using them as synonymous since they're very close) is always metal. You're not going to get anything else out of it.
