GREENBACKS, OLD VS NEW? FOR 7 STRINGS? TUNED TO A with 100 watt rectifier amp

Just wondering what the difference is between the new greenbacks and the older ones. I play 7 strings and Gibsons tuned to A, C & B tunings. I like the tone of the greenbacks better than the v30s but wonder about the low end and wattage with my Dual rectifier. I also have 2 g12k100 speakers they would be mixed with in a Mesa cab. Any thoughts?

I've never really considered the greenback series, new or old, to be terribly good at handling a lot of power, and low tunings need power. I think you'd have better luck with a higher power handling capacity speaker, like EV or Emminence.

Someone told me to get g12h30s instead of Greenbacks. Any thoughts? I would be mixing it with either 2 v30s or 2 g12k100 speakers in a Mesa 4x12

If I'm remembering correctly, the g12h30 is rated at about 25-30 watts. They're going to start to break up much faster than the 100s. I think I'd stay away from the low power handling speakers and use all 100s in the cab. Just my opinion, though.

+1.

When I was talking about speakers, I realized that I screwed up. It's the old G12H30s that are desireable, not Greenbacks (not sure where I got that from :smack: ). Mesas would rock with EVM-12L speakers. They don't break up and are extremely articulate and tight. I'm sure they'd bring out the low tunings.

I kinda like a speaker to have breakup. I will keep th g12k100s as they are made for downtuning in the Marshall mode 4 cab. I just want a speaker that has a little classic tone to give me the best of both worlds. The v30s are cool but have a honky high mid thing that overemphasizes the Mesas buzzsaw frequency. I like the greenbacks good qualities as well as the v30s good qualities. I was told that the G12H30 would be my speaker but I wonder about the wattage. I know they make g12h80 and others but I heard its more like a black shadow or classic lead 80 which I just sold as it did not jive with my mix. Any thoughts?

It's your choice obviously. I think the 30s will break up too soon and you won't get any breakup if at all from the 100s. I've tried a similar setup with a vintage Fender speaker rated at about 30 watts and a 75 watt Emminence. Not very pretty. No tone to speak of from the Emminence and mud city from the Fender. This was with a tube amp that put out about 65 watts.

G12H30's are supposed to have the best low end of all the vintage style speakers. I believe they were originally used mainly in the Marshall cabs that had "bass" on the grill cloth.

What if I mixed them with my v30s? Would I get the same low end as I have with the g12k100 speakers. I am not so worried about headroom as I am about sweetness of tone and annoying frequencies from the v30s. If I did mix v30s with g12h30s should I put the v30s on the bottom of the cab to counteract the annoying frequencies of the v30? I already have weber beam blockers on them and it helps but? Dont the g12h30s come in higher watts?
