Ground wire confusion?

Hi, I have a 4wire humbucker going into a new set-up. I have read the bare (silver) wire is ground. I also have read the green wire is ground (as I always thought). So which is ground? Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Ground wire confusion?

The bare wire connects the metal screening parts of a pickup to ground, regardless of what the other four conductor wires are being used for.

Re: Ground wire confusion?

And there will be one of the pickup wires that must be ground. That will depend on the wiring scheme and the colour code of the pickup in question.

Re: Ground wire confusion?

These are most of the major brands, the bottom of the 4 wires and the bare go to ground in most guitars.

Re: Ground wire confusion?

I can't believe no one has answered your question directly. Both are ground. You have a "chassis" ground, (the bare wire), and an electrical ground. (The green wire.) However, you may want to connect the pickup out-of-phase. Then the black wire might be "ground". Actually, "grounded" would be technically more correct. So . . . the bare wire, (chassis), is always grounded, while you can select which of the other wires becomes "ground", based on you wiring scheme.

Make sense? :)

Edit: Btw, my answer is only more clear than the others, if you use my logic. Not everyone does. :D

The OP question is somewhat imprecise. No manufacturer is specified. No circuit application is specified. Hence, it is impossible to provide a comprehensive answer, tailored to individual requirements.

The alternative would have been to provide multiple answers, covering every possible eventuality. Information overload is just as unhelpful as having none.
