Guest Luthier – Michael Anderberg

Michael Anderberg has been involved with fine wood crafting for over 30 years. Initially he developed and honed his skills by building and refinishing custom furniture and then, 18 years ago, began designing and building guitars.

From the outset it was Michael’s vision to create something completely by hand, with no mechanization. It’s an old-school approach rarely seen in today’s computerized luthier workshop. The tone woods are hand-selected by tapping for resonance, the shapes are hand-drawn and refined for balance and old-fashioned comfort and playability, the Seymour Duncan electronics are individually selected for each instrument like a wardrobe and the hidden innovations are plentiful. Here are some of his pieces:

Michael has a number of his own patented inventions inside of his guitars that you will find nowhere else in the world. Michael’s approach to his craft is one that has roots in family, faith and artistic aesthetics.

One of his instruments was recently reviewed in Premier Guitar magazine. Out of more than 1,000 pieces of gear reviewed by Premier Guitar in 2009, Michael’s guitar was among 41 exemplary products selected for the prestigious Premier Gear honor.

Michael will be on hand today, Tuesday, November 24, 2009, from 10 – 4 Eastern, to answer questions. Please join this fun and informative chat. One lucky participant in today’s chat will win a Seymour Duncan Guide to Pickups DVD.

welcome michael
what can you tell us about your patented innovations inside the guitar?
what are they?
what problems were you trying to solve with them?
how did you stumble upon them?

Hey Micheal, glad to have you here! Nice work!

I'm going to ask if you've discovered any "new" tone woods for electric guitars - or if you tend to stick to the tried and true choices of Swamp Ash, Honduras Mahogany and Maple? Looks like your bass is made of Zebrawood.

Also: you seem to favor a guitar with deep cutaways - do you find that affects the deep bass and low mids in any way? I've always found that a single cutaway guitar gets a bigger tone than a double cutaway guitar. I guess I'm thinking of the PRS Single Cut vs. the regular PRS design.

And finally: what kind of finish are you using?

You tout your guitars as being "custom", are they truly custom guitars, or do you have set guidelines that are then customized to the customers desires?

Do you favor a specific design (e.g., neck joint, body style, tone wood, etc)?

I`ve developed a resinating chamber that gives the guitar more sustain and open time. Not patented yet,but I got the idea from an article about Eric Clapton bridge. He actually has my first finished prototype.

I like mahogany, but i`ve also used cherry with success.
All my guitars and basses feature a neck thru design with deep cutaway
for access to the top frets. I use lacquer.

Sweet looking guitar. Willie right? Made any like this in Trans Amber or Clear?

The P90 guitar is rather tasty looking too. Bet one like that with a Trans Amber Quilt top would be incredible looking.

Re: LIVE NOW - Guest Luthier Michael Anderberg

do you have a tone in mind before you start building or do you "listen" to the wood and just try and bring out its best qualities?

the guitars in the pics are all double cutaways, do you prefer that type over a single cutaway? is it a tone thing or playability?

Re: LIVE NOW - Guest Luthier Michael Anderberg

As a small-volume builder, do you feel like the frame of reference of what works for an electric guitar is already set by G-word and F-word, and you have to consciously try to make your designs dissimilar to theirs?

As in, for example "a Stratocaster shape really is the best for what I want, but I have to consciously get away from that shape to create my own design niche"

Hi Michael, fairly simple question (to ask anyway!): How do you go about selecting the ideal pickups for each instrument?

Cheers!
