Guitar Binding Question

So I have a Warmoth guitar that I won off of eBay. I didn't now it needed binding, which I thought not a big deal just something I will learn to do. So I ordered the binding from Warmoth and its too tall.

So, I've never done any work with binding and quite frankly don't care for it. Any advice on where to go from here? Thanks!

Re: Guitar Binding Question

How much taller is the binding? You want it to be a little proud of your binding route so you can scrape it down flush to the wood.

If it's very much taller than that, run a cut in a 3-4 foot long scrap to the depth you need, press the binding into it and just scrap/chisel/sand to flush with the surface and then pull out the binding. Voila, proper height.

Make your own binding glue with some acetone and some of the binding. Warm the binding with a hair dryer as you pull it around curves and tape every few inches as you go.

Or, given that you don't care for binding, sell the body and get another one.

Its about 1mm taller–and selling the body is not an option ;) I've already fallen in love with the rare flamed Redwood Top, ordered the matching 7/8 Warhead neck (Mahogany with Ebony board), have the tremolo and tuners, and ordered the pickups (although I haven't heard from Becky Lawrence since I placed the order and paid via PayPal on 2/18)

Re: Guitar Binding Question

Binding should be a bit taller than the groove.. that way you can scrape it and sand it to fit perfectly.

Ugh...that means its going to be a bigger project that I thought it would be... :smash:

Oh well, here's to scraping and sanding! :friday:

Ha! I honestly don't have the tools nor space in my apartment to do this. My dad thinks he can do it and he has the tools to do it. The body is not finished yet–I am talking to a luthier here in Atlanta about it so see what my options are...gonna go with black binding because of the black hardware.

Re: Guitar Binding Question

Wait, somebody had a Warmoth body with the binding channel cut but no binding? Did the previous owner cut the binding channel?

Edit. Looking at the turtle, I'm afraid that may not be genuine. The turtle is rotated 90 degrees, and doesn't look to be the same as their normal design.

I think that's just an older 80's design.

Google image searched turned up a couple of other bodies with that perpendicular logo.

Re: Guitar Binding Question

I also found a listing for one with this turtle claiming to be a 2010? Something doesn't seem right.

interesting. But did they have the 7/8 size back then?

According to Warmoth it is legit but an older one. They've made some changes to the 7/8 Warhead body. The guy I bought it said they had binding for it somewhere. lol
