EDIT: It seems by the fact that there's been numerous views of my original question in this post but lack of a single response, I presume the thread I am thinking of was on some other forum. But, I'd like to hear the views of the forum members here, so I'd like to change this thread to a request for members to reply with their own list of electric guitar components in descending order of influence on the guitar's overall tone. This should end up being a lively and
informative thread by the time it's all said and done.
some clarification to help avoid going OT:
- solid-body, 6 or 7 string electric guitars only.
- only the materials and components that make up a guitar, like body wood, fretvoard wood, type of pickups, type of bridge.... NOT factors like picking style, volume knob setting, pedals used, pickup height, polepiece height settings, etc.
- the hypothetical electric guitar for this discussion should be considered as plugged into an amp vs. strummed/played unplugged
- the differences introduced by the different types of amps and speaker types, are excluded
- string material and stri.ng gauge is excluded
Alright... here is my own list just to be fair, although I certainly don't have 100% conviction that it is even close to accurate.
1. Body wood/material and amount of it. This includes p4esence or not of a top material
2. Pickup type(s)
3. Fretboard wood/material
4. Bridge type/design and material type
5. Scale length
6. Neck wood/material and amount of it
7. Number of tone/volume controls, etc.
8. Quality of caps/pots used
9. Nut material type (includes locked or unlocked designs)
10. ?
11. ?

There was a pretty handy thread in the last year that I can't find my way back to using Advanced Search, where members listed electric guitar components like fretboard material, type of body wood, etc. in order of influence on overall tone, from highest to lowest. Can anybody provide a link back to that thread?
