Guitar finish repair - HELP

Re: Guitar finish repair - HELP

Black permanent marker.

Try it first before you do anything drastic... chances are it'll look 7/10 with no risk, while repairs that could get you to 9/10 come with a risk of turning the whole thing into a 2/10

Re: Guitar finish repair - HELP

I tried looking at some videos on you tube but wanted to hear a little more about it.
The guitar is mint except for this massive ding.
I've heard finger nail polish, black marker, super glue with dye, black lacquer.
And then using a razor blade and wet sanding to level and buff out.
I'm looking to try to do this thing myself so what ever I think I can pull off with out ruining it.

Re: Guitar finish repair - HELP

Black marker wont make anything worse. Start there and see if it still bugs you

Paint looks super-thin, and is that even paint? Or a photoflame film?

Re: Guitar finish repair - HELP

StewMac sells black superglue.
Be forewarned though - even the best repair will still be visible to some degree.

Re: Guitar finish repair - HELP

Marker will fade to blue or soak in to gray
I wouldn't use marker
They have craft paints at Walmart
Or auto touchup paint

The automotive touch up paint is what I used on my Ehdwuld branded semi hollow
To cover the unfinished edges of the F holes

The last repair i did with it turned out great, but yeah i agree it will be noticeable.

It's not a photo flame finish.
This is a Gibson traditional vintage burst. There's no flame on the guitar.

Regarding how this happened, I don't know. The previous owner did it.

black dye, don't use ink but a true dye. Stewmac sells great dyes. Superglue? could work but golly that's a big ding. I'd go with drop filling nitrocellulose straight out of the jar, the non-diluted stuff (luthiers dilute that stuff with thinner before spraying). It will blend with the current finish and will leave a near invisible result after sanding and buffing. it will take a while to drop fill this though but.... it will work fine.

Then, once it's full, cure for 6 weeks. use grit 600, 1500 and 2000 wet to sand this baby. You MIGHT have to sand the entire thing and polish it because it might look off.

With a poly finish I would go with superglue but since it's nitro, I wouldn't go with it.

Re: Guitar finish repair - HELP

"Gibson" Les Paul gloss or satin finish? If so, it would have a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Black super glue or black stain (India ink) and clear lacquer drop fill.
