Guitar ideas

Alright, you guys never fail me. I just sold most of my gear and I'm looking for something. I don't know what Im looking for yet. Im trying to find a backup guitar. I am hoping to spend somewhere between 300-500 and I am only spending that much because it is a backup and will only be used 1 or 2 times each show. I play all sorts of music, but I am unfocused on what I want in a backup guitar. Help?

Re: Guitar ideas

+1 on the Strat, well what kind of guitar is your main guitar? I'd say a tele or a strat but you might want something a little different.

Re: Guitar ideas

unfocused on what ya want... well there is a big variety, check out the used market in your price range and try a bunch of different guitars.

If you want an idea... keep your eye on the trading post here on the forum, good stuff comes up from time to time.

Rock On!

Re: Guitar ideas

You know, every now and them you can find a really great guitar in a MIM Strat, the other day I was at GC and played one the tone was great, it was an H/S/S it would would need a fret dress though, frets your pretty uncomfortable, but the price was $429, new.

Re: Guitar ideas

i would say check out some used carvins or washburns....i find they dont hold their value aswell as other brands so you can usually find some sweet deals.

If you have a strat already then i say look for a bucker guitar, or another strat but put blade pups in there and wire em up in series with the option to switch to parallel for a more classic strat tone. the blades in series sound really beefy, its awesome

EDIT: and by blades i mean rails, couldnt think of the word while i was typing this msg...but of course as soon as i clicked submit...

Re: Guitar ideas

What kind of music do you play? What kind of gear did you sell and why?

If you've got a strat already, I'd say get and LP or SG. They're must-haves, IMO.

Re: Guitar ideas

In that price range?

Agile
Malden
Michael Kelly
Cort

I'm sure you can find something they offer that appeals to you.

Re: Guitar ideas

I like the lp idea...but I can't find any that are nice and any that aren't in bad condition. I would go for agile, but I haven't heard enough about em. I like the input so far though. Ive never heard the rails thing, so I might just try that.

I play stuff like nirvana, shinedown, eric clapton....um, I guess that doesn't really help. but thats the stuff I like to play.

Re: Guitar ideas

Alright, they have been in the forums before so I hope someone can answer my question. What would be a good(cheap, in my pricerange, and plays good) les paul copy. And I need model too.

Re: Guitar ideas

look at schecter tempest customs

they're only 550 new and are basically lp's, but with a jb/jazz combo

personally i HATE the jb but i think i'm alone in the world on that

Re: Guitar ideas

+1 on the Schecter, great contrast to the Strat.

And Drew, there are a few people that don't like the JB, and I think they're all registered on this forum!

Re: Guitar ideas

Schecter and Reverend make the coolest 2 humbucker, set neck guitars... great playability, great looks with original designs and good prices.

You can always find a good Epiphone model, they are good for the money.

Re: Guitar ideas

OH i forgot about reverend

yeah those are solid, too

but i like the paulified strat look of the schecter tempest

Re: Guitar ideas

You can get a nice used flame-top set-neck Epiphone LP Std on eBay for $300 to $350; good solid guitar, in like-new condition. Get 2 used American-made pickups, also on eBay (Duncan, DiMarzio, Gibson, etc), and for under $500 in total, you can have a guitar that sounds as good as a Gibson (99% of players couldn't tell the two apart by sound alone under ideal conditions). No need to spend more than that, especially playing live when it can get banged around, and the room acoustics aren't that good to begin with (plus half the crowd is inebriated).

I'd also recommend an import 335 too (with American pickups) like a Epi Dot (plain top) or Dot Deluxe (flame top). Great for all genres of music.

Re: Guitar ideas

Thank you...I am going to guitar center with an idea in mind now. Im not sure if they have reverend, but hey ill look. The epi idea is probably what Im going with. I was thinking about getting an offbrand, but I would be spending just as much and its not worth it to me.

Re: Guitar ideas

PRS SE Soapbar II (Maple). PRS SE One. Tokai Love Rock Jr. DC.

Fender Tele (used MIM?) and put a Phat Cat bridge in the neck and a JD in the bridge. Unless your Strat is SSS, then I'd say Phat Cat Bridge in the bridge and a Jazz Bridge in the neck.
