Guitar porn

Decided to take a few pics last night of the Standard and the SG. Out of 50+ pix taken I only really like one or two but these are the best of the bunch.

Question for you guys that shoot the killer photos. What are you guys shooting with and what lenses? What can you tell me about your settings? I'm using a Nikon D50 using a 18-200 3.5-5.6 AF-S VR and I can't seem to get tack sharp pictures to save my life. Any tips?

Re: Guitar porn

I just got back from my honeymoon in Maui and took 700+ pics there. Many were tack-sharp and many were not. It depended on me, the environment, and luck more than anything. Gear is not usually the issue. But...

Do you have a good tripod? I hauled my $300 Manfrotto around everywhere in Maui. It was worth it. Put your camera on your tripod (or set it on something stable) and then use a remote shutter release cable OR set your timer. That way, your movement isn't causing a problem. Turn-off your VR when you shoot on a tripod. You camera will generate vibration if it's looking for vibration to quash.

Also, I see that you are using an 18-200 lens. The more that a peice of glass is asked to do, the less well it will do everything. That lens should be good enough to get tack sharp shots of your axes though. Avoid shooting at full stop on the wide or tele end. Most lenses sweet spots are somewhere in-between. Try different apertures. Again, most lenses sweet spots are not at either end of the aperture range either. The more light you can shoot in, the faster you can set your shutter speed and the less that camera movement will factor in.

Those are just a few things that I can think of.

BTW... your pics look great and so do your axes.

Man I just ordered the sg supreme in your exact color. I hope mine looks as nice as yours. Can't wait!!!

Re: Guitar porn

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Red Label - Thanks for the tips!

Broke - You're going to love the Supreme. Super nice guitars. Post up some pics when you get it, I'd like to see it.

Re: Guitar porn

Beautiful guitars and very nice shots! You aren't going to get tack sharp shots of your axes from a close 3/4 perspective. Too much relative variation between in the distance to focus across the entire pic. You can get tack sharp shots from a straight-on perspective (e.g., your last pic) since most of the guitar is a similar distance from the lens but then you fight hazing, reflections, and if you're indoors the flash. I usually just live with the unfocused edges of the 3/4 perspective shots, they usually look the best to me in spite of the focus issues.

Yo, J., where ya been? Or have I just been missing your posts?

I've mostly lurked for the past year or two. I find when I post a lot my gear purchases start increasing. I've been reading a lot of the boards for the past 3-4 months and in that time I've purchased another amp and 6 pedals  . I'm still trying to decide between a strat or a tele and I want another amp. Dam Gas is killin me :argh:
