Guitar - > Recording software crackling and skips in audio during tracking

what the hell? im recording a track in Reaper with Line 6 Gearbox with just 1 pedal turned on in it. while im recording, the audio will suddenly jump, so what im playing is off by a bit. when i listen to playback, the track i just recorded kind of skips at that same spot.

this never happened to me before. i assume it has something to do with buffer settings or whatever? help!

Do you have anything else running while you are recording?
Turn off everything that doesn't need to be on.
Especially anti-virus.

Make sure you're audio and latency settings are correct.

Make sure you have enough hard drive space to work on.
Defrag.

Everything that MM said plus, how are you monitoring whilst recording?

All my audio and MIDI passes through a MOTU Firewire box. This is where I plug in my headphones. That way, latency and timing issues are minimised.

Finally, why are you recording through a Line6 gadget when you have a perfectly good Fender valve amplifier and a microphone?

because I don't have a preamp. putting my SM57 in front of my hot rod would mean cranking the damn thing to 11.

edit: forgot to mention i (obviously) fixed the problem. i just bumped up the number of buffers and such. i get a tiny bit of latency when recording while monitoring through my headphones but its no big deal.

this. all my recordings have been done on a laptop with wireless internet(which is very likely the norm these days). my first few recordings have skips and pops like you're describing because i didn't turn my wireless networking off.
