Guitar set up question...

I just brought my Washburn NX6 to a local guitar shop who has a tech that supposedly does great work to have it set up as well as having a Custom 5 installed. But i have realized that the strings I have on the guitar for the set up are strings i generally dont use. I recently put on some of those Hendrix pure nickel strings on the guitar where i usually use Ernie Ball Slinkys which are nickel wrapped strings. They both are, however, the same guage (.10's). I know that you should use the same kind of strings that you usually use when setting up a guitar. My question is will it be a problem that im having it set up with pure nickel strings that i dont generally use even though they are the same gauge as my normal strings?

Thanks,
Max

Re: Guitar set up question...

Shouldn't be. If it is, it'll be a very small effect. and an easy fix.

In my experience (which may not be true for all), that rule seems more to apply to people going from 11-52 to something like 9-42. Not two different string types of the same guage.

Re: Guitar set up question...

yeah, ive never had a problem changing strings unless it was a different guage. you should be fine

Re: Guitar set up question...

Unless each and every string is the same gauge in both sets, your intonation will be a bit off. Might not be off by enough to bother you though.

Intonation tends to be a ballpark thing anyhow. You set it at one fret, and it won't be exact for the other frets, and it makes a difference how hard you fret your strings too.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you put your normal set of strings on, and it's not giving you problems, then ignore it.

+1

If you were really worried about it, grab a digital tuner and check out the intonation, a little turn here and there should be it if anything. Nothing severe.

If it were me.. I would play it as is or about 6 months and just set it up with the rest of the family.

Re: Guitar set up question...

as long as its set good at the nut usually I can do it allright just by looks and ear... I mean, if I want i will take a tuner and set it up nice, but for me.... hell i just need it close.

Re: Guitar set up question...

Unless there is a considerable difference in string tension between the pure nickels and wound set. Then a complete new set up will be needed as both relief and intonation will be scoobied.
