Digital EQ with factory presets? That's my guess.
I hear the difference it makes but the Tele still sounds like a Tele and the Paul still sounds like a Les Paul.
Now, if he could make that Tele sound like that Les Paul and vice versa I would be impressed! (Which begs the question...why not play one and compare it directly to the simulated version? I think we know why...)

One of the things that makes the Variax so interesting is the polyphonic pitch-shifting, which is more impressive than the guitar models. Going from open G to standard in different parts of a song is pretty fun.
