Guitar sound - Hammett or whatever

Ok, I've listened to a sound clip by one guy, he played the solo of Metallicas Wherever I My Roam. I was just thinking how he's got crappy sound, and then I recorded some sounds by myself and I realised that I got a really crappy sound too. Even worse than his :smack:
Thats most noticable when I try to bend 22>24 (1st E string) during the solo. Hammett has got really powerful sound  (time:4:50 in the song) , how can I get something like that. Do I need a tube amp, some sort of preamlifier, or a 2000$guitar, or all at same time? :) My sound is just not that consistent, thw tone is just losing its strenghts and colour, and it is not my guitar technique to blame. Maybe its about post-production?

P.S. I played Ibanez RG through a Digitech preocessor.

So much happens in the studio post as you said. A good guitar and a good amp with a few effects and play the hell out of the part- making things sound great on recordings takes a lot of work.

I'm sure they compress the guitar tracks to even them out - but he is also a great player.

Getting a powerful sound on high notes on the high E is plain hard. It's not exactly the biggest string to begin with, and you can't get much string movement playing up high anyway.
