Guitar synth trouble

I have godin lgxt and a Roland gr20. I've tried several times to calibrate this with no luck. All the tutorials I've found show how easy it is ... I can't even get it to read the right string while I'm setting the sensitivity. Is there a secret ingredient I'm missing?

Re: Guitar synth trouble

Could be a problem with the 13 pin cable, which can be a pain. In order to diagnose, you'd have to replace each component, and add one at a time. Did you get it all new or used?

Make sure you do a factory reset before you start tweaking- no telling how the original person has it set up.

I'm stuck and can't turn it on again until tomorrow night. Thank you so much for the suggestions. Hoping to report back with good news tomorrow!

Re: Guitar synth trouble

+1 for resetting the GR-20. To a novice, it may be difficult to identify whether a patch uses all six strings or just a few of them.

String muting is a major element of MIDI Guitar and guitar synthesizer technique. During initial set-up, it may help if you prevent the strings from resonating except when you actually play them. This should eliminate false triggering and, hence, reduce confusion.

It is possible that the GR-20 patches have been programmed to yield notes at a different pitch than that of the string that triggers them.

If individual pickup elements appear to be sensing the wrong string, either the GR-20 patch is programmed to not respond to some of the strings or the pickup element really is sensing the wrong string. (On my Chapman Stick/Grid, if I hammer on the lowest bass register string hard enough, it can trigger the Roland pickup element for the lowest melody section string. The result is a faint, deep gurgle rather than a strong, true note.)
