Guitar without a teacher

Re: Guitar without a teacher

My business, Left of Center Productions, is dedicated to the support of live entertainment. I teach lessons on occasion and charge $10 an hour, the first one is free. Then again, I hate DJ's and if putting more musicians on the street takes them out of the loop, then I'm all for it.

Re: Guitar without a teacher

When I started college I was lucky enough to get a guitar teacher as a room mate. He is an awsome teacher and has taught me for free. He says I play like I have been playing 4 or 5 years and only been playing for a little over a year and a half. I think you should get a teacher. The guitar teacher at my college wants everyone to play just like he does no matter what. Get a teacher who is not just trying to make a copy of themselves. Someone who helps you develope your own style and lets you play comfortably as long as it is correct. Get someone who has played longer than you have. My rule of thumb is they have to have 5 or more years of experience than me.

I agree with Lee, there is an absolute ABUNDANCE of information that can be absorbed on the net... it only takes yourself to discipline and get to it.

Only if you're really putting in the effort in learning then you should go get a teacher - but with all the material (I guess you gotta know where to search - here's a good page [www.cyberfret.com - it has video's etc. on techniques]) that really shouldn't be the case.

It reminds me of the time where I joined Karate just so the teacher would force me to get fit. Wasn't all that fun :P

If you are sitting listenning to a piece of music and start whistling a solo - do you think about switching modes? Or whistle what you hear in your head?

Guitar solos should be just the same. You should play what you hear in your head. Modes are for non-musical guitar players (who are boring).

haha. except for the fact that some of the best guitarists know the modes and think about then when writing songs/ solos? and why are those interesting?

Re: Guitar without a teacher

no offense but if you are talking about guitar players who use modes like that and are refferring to progressive guys like vai and petrucci, I personally think that stuff is really boring and sterile thats why I can't get enough of guys like page and hendrix and slash, they just feel and sound real the other guys are just fake sounding....like machines. I don't mean to offend any body with that comment except maybe for the people I named. haha

I know scales and modes too - but I don't need to give them a name.

I play with my fingers what i hear in my head.

I don't think "Oh melodic minor - locrian".

I play guitar the same way I whistle - and that's the way most big name players play.
