Recently i've been lookin around for pickups for my Les Paul Standard on my search for the right tone. and i've come to the following conclusion - I wanna install an APH-1 alnico II pro™ on the neck and an SH-4 jb model™ on the bridge. What do you tone wizards think of this combination??? Any help or recommendations will be appreciated. :smokin:

:) Oh Yes,
I use the Alnico Pro's in the neck position of all the guitars I build, and they are sensational, really deep mids, with lots of sustrain, go for it!!!

In a LP, I much preffer the Pearly Gates set, or if more output is needed in the bridge, slap a Custom in there along with the PGn.

The reason for this is because I like fat neck pickups with great clarity and bridge pickups that don't hide the inherent sound of the guitar.

What type of style do you play, and what sound are you going for?

What other gear are you using and type of music are you going for?

Hey man Welcome to the Forum!

I really dig the A2P, it really sings and has a bell like clarity in the high end. The PGs are a bit more rude and fatter sounding.

The JB can sound either great or annoying in a LP, and the reason is that the pup is very sensitive to the guitar/amp and it's settings. Also it reacts pretty drastically to height adjustments/screw adjustments.

what kind of music are you gonna play with it? the JB sounds great for many style, but not for all ...

It will be versatile. It is the standard humbucker combination in Brian Moore guitars.

Re: Guitarists, I need your help!

I'll second Benjy_26's suggestions of a PG set or PGn/Custom. I currently have the PG set in my '96 LP Std and have previously had a Custom in the bridge position of that guitar. The PG set will cover pretty much anything, but if you play hard rock or metal the Custom adds extra punch to the bridge position (with less sweet cleans). As others have said, a lot depends on your musical style.

Re: Guitarists, I need your help!

I should have mentioned that I've played the A2Pn in the same LP. Loved the A2Pn, but love the PGn more. It has the warmth of the A2Pn but a clearer more open top end. It's warm, it's not boomy or bassy and it has the top end to cut through. It took me a while to get around to trying a PGn, but I have to agree with all the other guys who've said it - it's the perfect neck pickup in a Les Paul. :fing2:

What about a Pearly Gates bridge and a AIIPro neck? It just depends on the style of music you are into.

ive got the pg bridge and am planning on gettin the AIIPRO neck. the pg sounds like it might be better for more classy cleans though, something i cherish on the neck

Re: Guitarists, I need your help!

My style of playin is mostly rock n roll(Hard Rock, Blues, Hard Blues, Rock, Shredding), so as you can see, i want some kick ass distortion(in the style of slash, randy rhoads, gary moore type thing) out of my bridge pickup, but i want the neck pickup to also have distortion, along with sustain and good tone, which is why im choosing the APH-1 alnico II pro™ for the neck. So now my main headache is finding the right bridge pickup.

You want the Custom/Alnico II pro then.

Re: Guitarists, I need your help!

Yup. The Custom is nothing short of mind-blowing when it comes to hard rock & metal in a Lester. I'm in love with it (as I've said countless times on here now).

With a little roll of the volume you can pull off classic rock and some blues also bro. I LOVE the Custom.

Re: Guitarists, I need your help!

by 'custom', which one do you mean?? the SH-5 duncan custom™ , SH-11 custom custom™ , or the SH-14 custom 5™ ??

Re: Guitarists, I need your help!

They mean the SH-5 Duncan Custom. Generally, everyone on here loves the Custom/PG or the PG set in a Les Paul. Though I haven't used this combo myself, since I don't own an LP. But, if I did, I'm certain that'd be the combo I'd go with.
