Gus G Fire questions

After putting in a set of Gus G Fire in my Charvel CS Star, featuring an alder body and rosewood board, am pleased enough with the responsiveness of the p'ups to consider putting them another ax. However, the Fire in my CS Star sounds a bit muddy at the bottom. The high end is okay but not as nice as say, a Custom. Plenty of mids.

The questions:
Will Gus G Fires in a mahogany bodied superstrat with an ebony board accentuate the highs and maybe tighten up the lows?
I've read you can put almost any SD p'up in there with the pre-amp, has anyone used a Custom in there and was it manageable? Actives thru my set up tend to feed back uncontrollably because of the amount of gain I use with my passive equipped guitars. Not really feasible to start changing settings on signal processing and amp to accommodate both passive and actives.

Re: Gus G Fire questions

The blackout modular preamp that the Gus g set uses color the tone pretty heavily, some have said 75% preamp & 25% the pickup. Also the preamp adds tons of output & darkens the tone quite a bit.

Adding a hotter pickup to the BMP may make the pickup super hot and even a bit muddy. The coil packs the ahb1's are based on use a jazz wind for both neck and bridge, I didn't check my Gus g pickups before I put them in but I suspect they are still fairly low, under 10k

I have thought about trying a different magnet in the Gus g bridge to tighten up the bass a bit. An A8 or ceramic in place of the A5 mag may do just that, otherwise i would try lower output pickups like the 59, WLH, pearly gates or A2pro's.

Many thanks, good sir! Was beginning to think no one on here either used Gus G's or was interested enough to offer some insight. :9:
I guess I didn't realize how much the pre amp effected the tone.
If putting a lower output p'up in is advisable, (as you stated, under 10k) do the p'ups suggestions you made have tighter low ends and slightly more defined highs?
As stated, looking to get the tonal characteristics of the Custom but with the responsiveness and output of the pre amp...

Re: Gus G Fire questions

The thing about the preamp is its gonna shift the eq some towards the bass/ mid side.

A Duncan distortion neck or a screamin demon may be closer to what you want. The DDn is an under wound custom with 12k ish output, while the screamin demon uses 43 gauge wire like the customs but more flatly eq'ed & 10k ish.

If all you looking for is a subtle tonal shift to more bass or a tighter sound a magnet swap might be what you want, they are a few buck and super easy to do compared to wiring in a new pickup or 2 and trying to get the sound you want from a rather unknown variable.
