Guthrie Govan

Hey guys.

Anyone here subscribe to GT (Guitar Techniques)?

Guthrie is one of their editors, and he is an absolute dynamite player.

I've been a fan for a long time. And I honestly believe that he should be on the next G3. Or make his own G3 with Paul Gilbert and someone else (Shawn Baxter maybe).

Check these vids out. In my opinion this guy is in the top echelon of players. He not only has every style of technique you can imagine, but his note choices and his ears are unique. Kinda like Eric Johnson meets Joe Pass meets Yngwie Malmsteen meets Scott Henderson. No one else plays like him:

Check out the track called: "Fives"

He has an internet forum too:

Re: Guthrie Govan

phenomenal, but a tad too clinical for my taste.

You know what I wonder - someone at his skill level - can they pull back and play more relaxed if they want to? But then again - why would they want to, when they can rip like that eh?

Re: Guthrie Govan

Well he plays...and then some....it just does not say anything at all to me....really tried to get into it...just cannot, but he sure is good!
Just not my thing, but I can very much appreciate what he does.

Re: Guthrie Govan

wicked. i love hearing players take traditional styles and put a modern twist on them.

Re: Guthrie Govan

He definitely knows when to hold back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMJH1r_YSaM

Also there are some great soft tunes on his alum. He never strikes me as one to overplay, or use techniques just because he can. I've seen him live a few times, every time he'd play the songs different - he improvises all of his solos. One of those days he was on a bit of an off day, another time he was in a mellow mood and playing smooth and tastefully and one of the times he was in the mood to rip. All of the times were absolutely phenomenal.

At a clinic of his I saw, you can really tell he has a studio musician mindset: While he spends alot of time on 'his' tone, and 'his' phrasing, he pays alot of attention to what fits in the song. You rarely hear him use the same vibrato technique more than once in a song.

A monster player, and seems like a very cool and down to earth guy. :)

Re: Guthrie Govan

He's sooooooo good, I LOVE he's playing, he definatly should be on G3.

Re: Guthrie Govan

Guitar Techniques is without a doubt my favourite instructional magazine out there. Worth the extra money that they charge here in Canada.

I find Govan very technically impressive, especially in that last video posted by NUNOSLASH, but he does seem to fall into the common aesthetic of newer, guitar-based instrumental music.

"Fives" especially just reminds of something you'd hear for a demo of new gear, with great chops and with tone that is good-to-perfect, yet it excites nothing in me. Even though the tone is creamy and the technique is stellar, I could not remember a single musical statement from the piece.

I will always love guitar, and will never stop trying to learn new styles and techniques, but something like this reminds me about why I even bother to play the instrument.

EDIT: In case I offended any serious Govanites out there, I will say he cops JB very well on that GT compilation track.

Re: Guthrie Govan

He's the best guitarist on earth, as far as I'm concerned.

Absolutely love the guy, and he's the reason why I tried out (and now love) Suhr pickups!

Re: Guthrie Govan

"Strange voice" there is no best.....and your scope is pretty narrow if you think so....
There is alot of cats out there...
It is an idiotic term to begin with....best...best what?

It's subjective. I also believe that he is best in the world also.

There is technique, creativity, versatility, tone, down-to-earthness. ON all these aspects, I'd pick him over Steve Vai or Satriani. Well Maybe Steve vai is still most creative, but the other aspects, Guthrie takes the cake in my opinion. Making him the best out of all "known" guitarists. There might be some virtuoso brewing in small town china that nobody knows about. But from known fighters, Guthrie is number one, and by a large margin, in my opinion!

Re: Guthrie Govan

Guthrie is quite simply one of the best guitar players alive in this moment IMO.
His control over the instrument is mind boggling and his incredibly musical.
The only 2 guys IMO that are better lead guitarists are Satch and Vai, which is saying a lot I think.

Re: Guthrie Govan

Best is still a useless term here....
As pointed out before, he sure can play...but he is just not saying much to me....
There are alot of good players out there.....known as unknown....and he does not rise above in any way....incredibilly gifted...but does not stand out to me, more than others of that caliber.

Re: Guthrie Govan

Been listening to Erotic Cakes a bit this week. Enjoyable. I like the esoteric shreddy elements to it, but I'm a simple dude and still prefer the songwriter-approach adopted by guys with far less technical wizardry like Andy Timmons.

Re: Guthrie Govan

Since when??
Just because he does not show it??

what the hell are you talking about??

I said I prefer Andy Timmons' music to Govan's because his style is more songwriting-oriented instead of protracted fusion jams.

Is there a problem?
