Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

haha a couple of mummys brought back to life :D

Very cool man.. those are going to be supasweet in your tele :)

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

Cool, nice B-Day present to yourself eh?

I just got a Ant Humbucker bridge and it kicks butt, I am sure the Tele Ants will smoke too!

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

those are some nice pickup curly. you will love the sound. what tele are those going in?

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

I have to put 'em in my blue ash tele, since it has an early 50's vibe :)
I like the JD I have in there now, nice and rich with harmonics, but I think the Ants will be perfect.

I'm ending up with more tele pickups than guitars lately ... you know what that means, right???? :D

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

pretty sweet Curly. Too bad I'm not heading to Cali on my way to Mi, or else I'd love to jam w/ ya.

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

You guys gonna make me buy another tele! :banghead:

Tres Cool Curly! Glad for you.

Well, I'm a noob here, but let me think . . . .

. . . . uh . . . drill more holes . . . to mount more p'ups? :laugh2:

But seriously, looks like you had a happy B'day afterall. ;)

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

Sweet, Curly. Just snagged myself a Strat-set off eBay on Sunday, can´t wait for them to get here :32:

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

You cats are all pretty funny! and some of you know how to work all the angles (like GJ):)

seriously, the Ants are something special ... maybe the idea of creating a pickup that looks right at home in a vintage guitar doesn't seem like such a big deal these days, and I'm sure it could've grown out of a need that some vintage owners had for pickups that didn't look out of place .... but they are sweet looking, and have a cool vibe ...

on the factory tour, Seymour showed us a jar of "pickled" pickups, that have been kept in water for I don't know how long, but they're completely rusted - still, I think they might work if you dried 'em out and hooked 'em up. I think they may have been a set for Billy Gibbons at one time, but I could be wrong ....

anyway ... the point is that Seymour's kind of an archaeologist, with his hobby of collecting arrowheads, and he's used that to create pickups that not only sound terrific, but taste, touch, and feel like the real deal ... that's pretty cool! :D

and, I have to admit that I have my eye on a new tele, besides my USA Custom project. The Ants are headed for my blue ash tele, and I just can't let my other sets go to waste .... can I???

nah, the 'tele madness' has been a lot of fun ... I just found myself surrounded by so many tele players that it rubbed off :D
Then we had the "ultimate tele" thread with so much good info (did you all notice how many views that thread had???)
I'm definitely more at home with a strat, so the tele presents a real challenge for me ... as much as I'd like to play country on a tele, I don't know if I'll ever manage that - everything I play still comes out Rock 'n Blues! I really think teles make you work harder for your tone, but that's half the fun of playing one.

much peace

Re: haha .. got my tele Ants!

Congrats on the Ants Curly and a belated happy b-day. I look forward to a really in-depth review.

I was just talking to Curly and mentioned how much I'd learned doing that Ultimate Tele thread.

When I do reviews, I sometimes forget how differant the same pickups can sound in two differant but seemingly identical guitars.

I have three teles...all identical except for body wood. Two are very light swamp ash and one fairly light alder. One piece maple neck, vintage Fender bridge with three brass saddles, Kluson style heads, etc. on all.

When I tried Nocasters in my alder tele I posted that I thought they were to bright for my tastes. When I heard them in my swamp ash tele I liked them: still very bright but not so ice picky.

When I tried the Antiquitys in my alder tele, they sounded bright too, but not as bright as the Nocasters. I'm going to try the Antiquitys in place of the Nocasters now in my swamp ash tele...I'll bet the ants will sound a little warmer and smoother in swamp ash and that I'll like them even more than I already do!

When I tried the Jerry Donahue in my alder tele I felt it was the Ticket to Tonal Nirvana I'd been searching for, for 30 years...but in a swamp ash tele, I'd bet it would sound warmer and to some people might need more edge. Maybe not...I haven't tried it yet in a swamp ash tele.

But so far, I'd say:

Antiquitys have the livliest tone, some good quack but not as much quack as the Jerry Donahue, and the closest to a "Roy Buchanan" vibe.

Nocasters have the brightest, clearest tone.

The Jerry Donahue has the quackiest tone, like my '51 Tele, and is my fave by just a hair!

Fralin Blues Specials have the highest output and win the "balls with clarity award" (to cop the Guitar Player review wording) and probably the best overall neck pickup tone...like a smooth Strat.

I am really excited about the new Tele pickup sets MJ is custom winding for me...probably won't get them for another month tho!

They'll be an Antiquity version of the Jerry Donahue lead pickup, Antiquity version of the Tapped Tele lead pickup Seymour and Curly have (something like 6.6K and 10K) and a special Antiquity version of the "Strat tone in a nickel covered Tele neck pickup" offered by the Duncan Custom Shop.

I am especially looking forward to the tapped Tele lead as my original pickup in my '54 Tele only measures abrout 6.2K! To weak for a killer lead tone but gorgeous for rytyhm when combined with the neck pickup. With the Tapped Tele lead pickup I should be able to get both a great rythym tone and a little something extra for soloing.

At least that's what MJ is telling me. She's a cool lady!

Hah! I have never licked an Antiquity...and don't plan to! :laugh2: You don't know where that pickup has been. I have sniffed one tho...wasn't bad. :burnout: Lew

Lew, I certainly appreciate the review. You're as about as in-depth as they come and that's what I like. I had the Nocaster in my ash Tele. It was very nice. I also had the Jerry Donahue in it as well. I had it in there for a long long time until I heard another player's Tele and I realized that my highs were just a hair too "airy". That's why I went to the Nocaster pickup. I do, however like Alnico II magnets better than Alnico III. I was leaning towards the Alnico II Pro. However, I run my whole rig pretty hot. With the Variax, I get no 60-cycle hum nor hiss. When I plug my Tele into the rig, she squeals and hums and all that. I'm thinking about either a Vintage Stack or having MJ make me an Antiquity Stack. I have owned the Vintage Stack before and it's a great-sounding pickup.

Cheers,
