halfway between a '56 goldtop (p90) and a 6120

Looking for Real Life
that's the criteria for my next build, i'm unloading the nashville (just don't dig it anymore) and starting a new project

i know i want a bigsby, and the pickup config is either gonna be 2 tv jones classic plus's, or a power'tron in the bridge and a p90 in the neck. I guess which one comes closer to that sound depends on the guitar. Neck has to be short scale but have good upper fret axcess, the one thing i don't like about my gretsch is the 15th fret is kinda hard to hit, or at least harder than i'm used to, 18th is near impossible. I also like fat necks, can't stand the skinny ibanez ones

so, any suggestions? keep it cheap, i'm only getting $400 out of the nashville, wanna keep it at around $700 total.

Re: halfway between a '56 goldtop (p90) and a 6120

There's no way I can get TV Jones in my Green Buddy, but **** me I love those pickups! I'm dying to get a guitar I can sink some TV Jones into. I'd take the Classic Plus over the Powertron, but that's not to say the Powertron isn't awesome.

You got any pics of this Nashville?

Re: halfway between a '56 goldtop (p90) and a 6120

yeah, but it's already sold

I'm sure there's some way you can squeeze some tv's in there. I'm pretty sure they can get you whatever pickups in a humbucker size if that's what it takes

I'd still love to see pics, I literally don't even have $20 to spend right now! And there's two problems with the TV Jones for my Green buddy. First, the rings are for mini-buckers (and I haven't found humbucker rings that fit the arch). Second, if I get TV Jones, I'm getting the classic mount cause they look so ****in' sick! I'm not a fan of the bucker mount.

Best pickup/mount ever:

Re: halfway between a '56 goldtop (p90) and a 6120

i have the HB sized ones in my gretsch & i still think it looks purdy

but it is an aquired taste

anyhoo, guitarwise i'm looking at maybe a samick royale rl-3

i just wish it had a maple neck, i think it has a mahogany one. If it did it'd be perfect. Like i said just needs a bigsby & new pickups

tokai love rock may also do it

how do these things compare to lp's?

i find lp's a bit too muddy, and of course the bigsby would help with that but yeah

Sounds like you're doing something pretty similar to Neil Young's number one electric guitar.

I do like the HB ones, but I think the classic mount is the prettiest thing a guitar can have. I'm thinking about the HB ones for my Gibson though. I want that sound!

Heh your describing my faded LPDC with powertron+/P-90 combo.

You can get one of them used and slap a power tron in the bridge and still be within budget.

Re: halfway between a '56 goldtop (p90) and a 6120

Build 'yerself a Warmoth monster. I'd start with a chambered LP body...

You could EASILY build an instrument with good choice parts for $700 if you stay clear of the expensive exotic woods & do the finish work yourself.

Go with an oil or something spray can based...

That'd be an overall better bet then sorting through Epiphonys or something.

Re: halfway between a '56 goldtop (p90) and a 6120

oh and i checked the price on what i'd want from warmoth

near a grand for everything, over limit

Really?

I've been pondering a thinline tele build for at least a year or three and I can never get the raw parts much over the $600 mark. I'm not including pickups & some other sundrie bits in that total though...

Hmmm...

I dunno.

In the long run if you've got $700, then what's another $300 or so to get something that's EXACTLY what you want rather then settling or hot roddin' some other ride?

(plug alert!)

For whatever it's worth I'm pretty sure that I'm gonna have to launch this guitar (and a SLEW of other things) for a financial restructering.

It's a pretty responsive ride... compares HIGHLY favorably to my Gibsons & a buddies '91 PRS & '64 ES-330. (I think it's a 330!)

"X-Tone" by ESP ~ MIK semi-hollow. Set maple neck that feels not much unlike a Gibson "60" profile but with a bit more girth. I dig it a lot, LOVE big phat necks like '50s gee'tars. Mahogany body & cap, SCHWEET heel access too! Had EMG's in there when I got it, ripped those out so it's all new CTS pots & Orange Drops, Switchcraft switch & jack. Tone pros bridge & a graphite nut. Could be drilled for a Bigsby...

I actually REALLY wanted the Bigsby version of this ride but found this one used.

Probably about $300-400 shipped?!?

Got GFS retrotrons in there now, I still have those Gibson's around too.

Leaving here pickupless would be an option... bridgeless might another option?!

(plug-alert off!)

Peace.
