Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

HI All,

was reading this and wondering if anybody has combined in a humbucker hybrid , two single coil humbuckers. E.g.
- Bridge: YJM Bridge (Stacked humbucker) + Paralel Axis Original PATB1b (single coil from a true humbucker)
- Neck: YJM Neck (stacked humbucker) + Full Shread (single coil from a true humbucker)
Ref: http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/the-tone-garage/my-recipe-for-a-great-hybrid-pickup

Curious what the result will be. :) I guess its a trial and error. My main questions is if the single coil(s) can acutely be stacked humbuckers (like YJM)

I have a stag mag in the neck and always thought of getting one with half A2 half A5, one being underwound.

:opcorn:

I'm really interested to hear if a single coil sized humbucker and a (hum-canceling) single coil pickup can both fit side by side on a traditional-sized humbucker plate, and, if the operation of each is not affected by the other's strong magnetic field being so close by...

I want to say that Orpheo has done something like this, I think. Although I'd ask what you want to accomplish with a setup like that that you can't get another way.

Id imagine that linking up two hum cancelling single coil pickups together would be cool. Something like a CoolRails/HotRails or HRN/HRB...
There would be a whole lot of splitting options thats for sure, and Id imagine it would find practically in many situations.

And I have. It is a major stinker. The magnetic fields mix causing the pickups to sound muffled. Just a poor tone all over.

Rather, make a hybrid with their humbucker varieties and use smart coil splitting to get the tones you want.
Single coils aren't made for hybridizing imho

Makes sense. They're designed to sit a distance from other coils, and playing nicely with a coil next to them wasn't a consideration. There's so many HB coils you can make hybrid PU's from. So far the ones I've made sound good, although I doubt that's going to work out for every possible coil combination.

I guess the Stag Mag is a major stinker then.

Sigh.

Re: Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

The LesPaul black beauty with an HHH is alot of pickups jammed together, so how does this compare to having two single coils together in respects to their magnetic fields cancelling each other out? Just curious.
Is it because there is just a little space/distance between them as opposed to having two singles side by side?

Re: Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

Gregory. Have you ever took one apart? It's not two singles next to each other. It's two humbucker coils with magnetic slugs. 44awg, wound to 8k each. Add a silver nickel baseplate and it's a humbucker in disguise.

Much, much more space.

I have taken one apart, thank you very much.

You made a big stink about magnetism and now you're talking about coils?

...and single coils don't have magnetic slugs???

I don't think it really mattered. The potential additional tones weren't/aren't a big selling point for HHH guitars, as they never went over that well with guitar players. Which is why so few have been made over the last 60 years (versus HSH & HSS, which just about everybody copied). The middle HB's tone is a disappointment for some, it doesn't sound like it would if it were in the bridge or neck slot. Some players have to reposition their right hand so the pick doesn't hit the middle HB. Plus it adds weight to what is often considered a heavy guitar to begin with (LP Custom). But three gold HB's in a row sure look nice though.

Re: Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

The tone is through the roof putting 2 single coils together to form a humbucker. It still has single coil cut and character, but it's huge, hot, and skanky. It's the bomb.

Re: Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

Nothing better than a discussion about hybrids to solicit off-topic anti-HHH zealotry.

Re: Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

I brought the proximity of the HHH's up because I was trying to get a grasp on the magnetic fields that was mentioned and I thought it fit the topic more than enough not to ask it. I didnt mean to side track this, but its not a popular mod so not many will be replying with real world experience, so in my thinking, this could be a good guideline of do's and dont's which would surely help people thinking about it.

Re: Hambucker hybrid from single coil humbuckers?

And then there's a few that never seem to miss an opportunity to push HHH's...
