Hard Rock London vault guitar fondling.

I went to the Hard Rock when i was in London. Went down inot the vault for the tour.....never done that in Orlando which is now THE vault for the collection. I took the tour with a bunch of German high school kids...lol. Everyone wanted to handle the Jimi '67 V and the 80's SRV Srat, but to me, they were rather pedestrian guitars that wouldn't get a second glance had they not been owned by two of the Masters:fingersx: The one I fondled was a real live early 50's Esquire formerly owned by Jeff Beck. Badass. And I now can say with a high degree of certainty that my Nocaster relic is as close as you can get to the oldies. Right down to the ridiculously lightweight ash they used for the bodies and the cricket bat neck that seems to get a tiny bit thicker up toward the headstock. It was cool and a bit scary handling those guitars.

Did you get to strum it? Was it lively? Probably haven't changed the strings since it was aquired, though. Pretty cool to let you check it out. That sounds like a great experience.

Re: Hard Rock London vault guitar fondling.

Not sure if theyhad changed the strings, but it is kept in a climate controlled bank vault and is probably rarely touched. Every one else went straight for the Jimi V. It looked and felt pretty much identical to a current Nocaster Relic. REAL light and resonant. It had defnately been used over the last 50-odd years, but it was not abused.

*sigh*

If I were there I'd touch one of those things (just to say I did:) ), but I'd be way too afraid to play them.

The crazy Scotsman that was giving the tour told me to go ahead and play it. I was too embarassed :laugh2: If ya really want one, give Billy Gibbons a call. I think he has at least 20 of that model alone. I'm sure he would part with one:fingersx:

Is the crazy Scotsman still Jimmy? I was at the London Vault 3 years ago and had my hands on the Jimi V which was the one used at Isle Of Wight and Rainbow Bridge... It was a custom made left handed V made for Jimi... said to be his favourite guitar before his death... They also had 2 Pete Townshend Acoustics... and i also got a photo of me with the Jeff Beck tele.

I was hopeing they had some of Townshend's electrics there but Jimmy said the Florida Vault took a lot of the good stuff away from London.. The HR Resturant across the street from the Vault had a Few Townshend guitars... a Korina Flying V was one of them....

Re: Hard Rock London vault guitar fondling.

ps-Becks tele/esquire at the vault blew me away as to how sloppy the neck joint area was.... you could see the hand tool marks and everything

Re: Hard Rock London vault guitar fondling.

If you are talking about the Jimmy that carries a cane and looks and sounds like a cross between Billy Conelly and Long John Silver, then yeah....he is still there.:laugh2: I think that Orlando was being used as the central "vault" even before the fire at the London restaurant last year. It is now the central storage facility and "clearing house" for the whole chain. But if you have ever been to the Orlando store, you know why. It is the largest store in the chain by a WIDE margin. The Hard Rock Live Venue can hold up to 3000, which, to my surprise, is much larger than The Joint at the Vegas hotel, which holds around 1800. A VERY cool venue. I have been to see Velvet Revolver and the Moody Blues there and I plan to go to show there as often as i can in the future.
