P.S.- what is the difference between lets say A minor (C's relative minor) and A harmonic minor?

How is a harmonic minor composed?

That scale is pretty damn fun to play.

It's a little difficult becoming familiar with its unique fofrm, but that's what makes you a better player.

Harmonic minors are great for getting a more classical-esque sound into your playing. Alot of dudes throw #7ths within minor scales. Learn em, and rip em.

The b5 and #3 are also common additions to minor scales. Really, if you do it properly, you can play any note in any key.

Thanks Bluesguy. Lead guitar was a Jackson SL2H, '59 neck with tone knob rolled off. Rhythm guitars was a Warmoth Strat, middle pup. Amp was a Rocktron Pirahna into a Marshall JTM30.

As others have mentioned, the harmonic minor is indeed just a raised 7th. But also keep in mind that this applies to the chords too. For example, in the key of A minor, you have a natural G which would give you an Em chord (E, B, G). In A harmonic minor, the G becomes G#, thus giving you an E chord (E, B, G#).

I thought the harmonic minor was the one with the #6 and #7 ascending up the scale and had natural 6 and 7 descending down the scale and the melodic minor was the one with just the #7 ascending and the natural 7 descending. At least thats how I remember practicing them on my applied major instrument in college. But you're talking to a guy that's been programming computers for about 20 yrs so my terminology could be a little foggy. Let me know, cause its been so long that I could have the whole thing backwards! LOL!

As for your clip, it sounds like Zoro rides again! LOL! No really, its got a latin Flamenco kinda thing going. Cool!

Harmonic minor is just the 7th changed.

I've been meaning to play around with this scale as well, it has a cool vibe to it.

I really should remember this stuff better! Jazz cats use this scale in the classic II-V-I turn arounds all the time.

Another great application of the harmonic minor scale is altering a major scale. Just play a harmonic minor a half step above the major scale. For instance C# harmonic minor instead of a C major scale - it will include C major's 5# 5b 9# 9b, plus C, E and A. Cool, isn't it?

Yeah, the jazz guys use melodic minor a lot. Some will actually play it with the raised 6th and 7th on both ascending and decending unlike the classical guys that play it natural on the decending. Those guys are crazy. :D

Right! I just saw Pat Martino live for the first time! He is so tight man! I had one of his instructional videos once where he demonstrated playing a minor a 5th up from the root of a dom 7th chord. It adds bluesy accidentals. Cool!
