Has anyone tried a full set of Hot Stacks? (STK-S2)

As the title says, has anyone tried a full set of the Old Hot Stack pickups? I’ve only found one video on youtube with the full combo, but I’ve got to say, it’s a pretty cool sound. Has anyone tried the full set?

Actually, I have only used 1 in a set. I'd be interested if anyone has experiences with 3 of them.

Those sound pretty different- sort of compressed and wiry/nasal. I like the middle a lot actually.

The bridge is a pretty good sound as well; almost traditional. But for some reason the neck just seems inordinately bright.

Yes, they seem like a cool 3rd or 4th set for more rockin stuff.

I tried them and didn't like them. They sound compressed and are horrible pickups if you like clean strat sounds. It's all mids and no sparkling treble. When split they are ear-piercing. I could play metal with these, but that's about it.

Yeah, I don't think anyone buying them would be interested in their clean sound. They would almost always be used with distortion.

The tones that dude is getting remind me of the Fast Track 1, although the FT1 has a bit more sparkle to the highs and is less compressed.

Cool video, but I’d have liked to have heard positions 2 and 4 in there somewhere too... especially for the clean and crunch tones.

I have a Hot Stack that used to be in the center on my Westone (see my avatar), but it’s the neck version and it had trouble keeping up output-wise with the JB and Jazz I have in the bridge and neck. Planning on trying it again in an upcoming project which won’t be sporting such hot bridge and neck p’ups.

Re: Has anyone tried a full set of Hot Stacks? (STK-S2)

I’m glad this is finally getting some traction.

I’ve got many Strats that do variations on the vintage Strat thing, and I’ve got a few with hotter stacks (Lace, Dimarzio) and a few with Humbuckers. These would be an alternative tone. Players like Brent Mason have used the Hot Stack quite successfully over the years in a non hard rock context, so I’m thinking they might be a fun pickup combo to try out.

I have 2 which were used in the neck and middle position of a Kramer Pacer along with a Duncan Custom (full size HB) in the bridge. At that time, I was not fond of the Hot Stacks in that guitar, but I'm pretty sure it was due to the tone of the Floyd Rose tailpiece. They can have a very brittle sound.

As an experiment, I put them in my short scale Stratocaster (Warmoth SS neck). There is a traditional Fender tailpiece on it.
The bridge pickup is a Duncan Little '59. I love them in this guitar. They sound great without the high end I heard in the Floyd Rose equipped guitar.
I do not have any of the pickups set up for auto-split in 2 and 4. They are all wired full humbucking/noise cancelling.

The guitar can have a large effect on how the pickups sound.

Late to this party, but I am interested in this pickup.

Do they quack OK in positions 2 and 4?

Thanks.

Re: Has anyone tried a full set of Hot Stacks? (STK-S2)

I guess I'm alone in liking that neck pup sound. To me it sounds very Stratty, very quacky...like position 4.

Don't much care for the bridge pup, sounds too much like a humbucker, not enough like a Strat single.

I thought the neck pickup sounded pretty good too
