Has anyone tried any of the Mi-Si products?

We installed the Align XT system in a customers Taylor and it sounds great, works great. Charge it through the end pin jack for 60 seconds, and then play all day. I'm going to get the Motif system for my Alvarez.

But mainly, I wonder how this system might work to power active pups. Two active humbuckers or three active singles, draw less than 1 ma. I bet this could power them for several hours. Or maybe an onboard/built-in pedal for an hour or two.

I may have to try this.

There’s been at least two (that I’m aware of) active pickups or preamps on the market that used rechargeable batteries. The issue comes down to how much current the battery can supply vs. the op amp being used.

The original EMG pickups used the same op amp as the original Musicman bass. You can set the slew rate which affects current consumption. It uses so little power that the original Stingray bass didn’t even have a switching jack! The battery was always connected.

So aside from maybe making changing batteries on an acoustic easier, or not necessitating a battery box, you are probably better off with a real battery.

But I’d imaging things will progress in that direction.

Technically, these aren't rechargeable batteries per se, but super-caps. I think I'm going to order the Motif system and then switch on different resistors to test how long it will last under different loads.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but if it's going the direction I think, it's for this: I've been playing around with different ideas for adding active pickups, and/or active electronics to guitars that weren't designed for a battery housing. I've already got a few things done on paper, that allow active electronics to be powered by +48 volt phantom power. But this also looks like an interesting option.

It's one of those "building a better mousetrap" thangs.

Unless it's a single-bucker, single-volume axe with a really tight rout, you really don't need a dedicated battery housing... bit of foam, bit of tape and all is well. And if you're really big on doing things cleanly, you can mount a battery clip to the inside of the cavity cover

Yeah, I get that. And it's my fault for not starting at the beginning. All electric guitars plug into an amp that plugs into the wall. There's a market for active electronics in our instruments. Whether it be active pups or building certain effects into the guitar. Microphones have used phantom power since the late 40's. Maybe before "electric" guitars were invented. Why haven't we done that with our axe's? A simple TRS 1/4" plug/jack on both ends does it.

That's kind of the issue I've been playing with.

I've always messed around with the idea of using a standard 9v rechargeable battery and wiring it so that I could charge it up every now and then, but I've never considered super caps. Let us know how it works out.

I will. I didn't think of it myself 'til I tried the Mi-Si products. I have no affiliation with that company. Just discovered them myself.

BTW, you're in Virginia. Up early, or up late?

Me too. This is a special situation for me. Cold/flu from hell. I don't want to cough all night in my wife's face. So I stayed on the couch tonight. I swear. If I cough one more time, I'm going to rip the mesh out of my hernia op. :smack:

I lived in Newport News when I was in the 4th grade. I still have fond childhood memories of that place.
