Have you done dumb things like this before?

I am building a new warmouth strat & was installing new SD pickups 2 humbuckers & 1 single coil. I had never wired up a strat like this before so I was being maticulas in doing everything right. Well i got it all wired up & pluged it in & there was loud buzzing on every position. Well I have put more pickups in guitars I have had than I can count. So I got disgusted & started taking it all apart & was just going to wire it up standard like 3 single coils. And about the time I got it all taken apart I noticed the diagram and the way the jack was wired. I have wired up so many jacks before it's rediculas. Well I wired it backwards. The hot to the ground & the ground to the hot. God I felt stupid at that moment. Well i put it back together right this time with both humbuckers split & it works perfect now.

Uhm... no. However, those are the kind of thing that can catch anyone out from time to time.

Re: Have you done dumb things like this before?

You've got to be rediculasly maticulas or it'll never work! :D

Welcome to the forum. Glad you got it sorted by looking at the things that are most easily overlooked.

Re: Have you done dumb things like this before?

I'm pretty sure I've done that before. Another silly mistake I've made is inserting TOM/STP studs, only to realize I forgot to insert the bridge ground wire first. That will a little annoying, but not a big deal.

Re: Have you done dumb things like this before?

I've sometimes had trouble with active jacks. You know where you have three wires going to it. Yeah, I've screwed that up before even after trying to be careful with it. So don't feel like the Lone Ranger. We've all had trouble on things like that.

I can honestly say I HAVE NEVER SCREWED UP!!!......................................................................................................................................at least not since the last time

You can't be careful on a skateboard, mister.

Re: Have you done dumb things like this before?

Just spent the better part of the morning chasing down a dumb mistake. This is a wiring job with lots of options. Dual-HB'er with Tele-style 4-way for Bridge/series/parallel/neck, master vol/tone/Q-filter, phase switch, and a 4PDT on-on-on so that you can do series/split/parallel of both HB'ers with one switch. Trouble is, the series mode of the 4PDT switch didn't work. I was tearing my hair out when, (upon very close inspection), I realized that I had neglected to solder one end of the series link on the switch. (The red arrow.)

I was going nuts! :banghead:

I haven't made that particular mistake, but have had those moments where I asked myself "Why the f*** did I do that?!?!". It happens to us all.

Wiring, cover tunes on a bar gig, dates, unfamiliar restaurants...

Re: Have you done dumb things like this before?

Stringing a bigsby over the tension bar. Ran a string over the tension bar behind the nut. The craziest I've ever gone was trying to wire my new no load tone pot. Couldn't get it right. Tried two or three. Nothing. Tried replacing the vol pot. Nothing. In the end I had two bad vol pots, fresh out of the box. Took me a week to figure it out.

If Artie can make a mistake like that, then ANYONE can.
