I'm not sure if the thread belongs here or in the soundroom but at this moment I 'm really playing with the thought of selling all my guitars (2:biglaugh:) and then use the money to build a custom guitar. I probably have around 3000$ when I sell them all.

Should I go for it or not?

Re: having a custom guitar build

if you decide to build one, you might want to have something around to play while you're doing your build. depending on a lot of factors - especially the way you finish it - it could take a while.

Re: having a custom guitar build

Nope. Don't sell two guitars that you're experienced with for a guitar that you've never played before.

Re: having a custom guitar build

I 'm still looking around for someone to build the guitar. It will probably be a model which resembles a eps horizon only without the pointy headstock. The 2 guitars I currently have are good guitars, but they 're still not exactly what I 'm looking for. One is a custom build tele (it wasn't build custom for me) and the other is a schecter c1 hellraiser. If I would decide to sell both, I could use a guitar from the other guitarplayer in my band...

Re: having a custom guitar build

i've been trying to figure out which part of my collection i can do without to afford some new and better quality goodies...

but i've been taking my time....

Re: having a custom guitar build

Gawd no.

I've had two goes at having someone build me a guitar and both have ended badly. I just wouldn't bother even trying again. The builders inevitably over-run (one of mine was meant to take 3-4 months; after 2 years I've finally gotten my refund), change the specs for you because they think they know better, rarely give updates.

It's a frustrating and pointless exercise and there's not really any certainty that the finished product will actually be what you want. I say buy off-the-shelf and adjust if necessary. Quicker, cheaper, easier.

Re: having a custom guitar build

well having a guitar made can be wonderful too...

but one of the down sides could be a low resale value!

Re: having a custom guitar build

You could have a pretty pimpin' Jackson Soloist for that cash, and some dough to spare for a night out with the ladies......

Re: having a custom guitar build

You wont get a top quality custom for $3k, but i'd say sell both and buy a Vigier Excalibur.

Re: having a custom guitar build

darn, 2 against 7 I was hoping for a more positive respons:kidding:

I was just looking for some downsides of doing this.... I have myself pretty much convinced that I 'm going to go through with this, so expect some questions about wood and tone in the coming days :biglaugh:

Re: having a custom guitar build

I love my custom brian moore...but what you are looking for is so close to a production model, you might keep looking for production guitars (carvin?) that gives you what you want. These days the reason to go custom is that you want certain wood, weight, neck profile, inlay, controls, etc that are so quirky that only a custom builder can do it. I wouldn't go custom just for the headstock.

Re: having a custom guitar build

no, I just said that it would look kinda like a horizon but the rest would be totally different.

the specs I have in mind at the moment:

Body: Korina (not sure white or black)
Neck: Mahogany
Fretboard: Pao ferro
maybe a maple cap...

Original floyd rose
Neck thru
Neck scale: 25.5"
Custom inlays
Bridge: SD distortion
Neck: SD jazz

Re: having a custom guitar build

remember these builds can cost a fortune and offer very little resale.... but on the other side of the coin you may end up with your favourite axe....

Re: having a custom guitar build

Yeah, that 's definately a risk.... I have a guitarbuilder nearby who seems to do a good job... the guitars he has build seem to look nice, although I don't know if they sound good :)

Do it!

Do it!

1) Decide the specs, especially the neck specifications. Be absolutely sure that these specifications are for you.

2) Find a luthier. Examine his work, play his guitars and decide.

Re: having a custom guitar build

3) Do NOT change the spec and do NOT allow the luthier to change it.

4) Agree a timescale for the build. If I did it again I'd build in penalties for not completing each stage on time. Any builder not to do that isn't worth giving money to.

Re: having a custom guitar build

I'd say keep your guitars and try a kit build. That way you'd have your "tried and true" guitars and one to modify as you see fit.

Re: having a custom guitar build

If you plan to have a custom guitar built for you, and you need to sell off some instruments to make that happen, you have to hang onto the guitar you play the most.

IMO certain guitars need to be off limits as far as selling and trading goes. Extra guitars that you don't really need, that have market value, and you don't play them? Those I can see selling.

Re: having a custom guitar build

I would say carry on hunting for a stock guitar that you like, until you're completely sure that only a Custom build will satisfy you.

I'm not sure of custom guitar builders in Belgium but Feline Guitars gets a real good name here in the UK, which isn't that far off. Their website is in the process of getting upgraded I think, but this page has a few good examples.

I have no connection with the company btw but the owner posts on a forum I frequent and he seems to be a good guy - plus his guitars look really cool.
