HB Neck Pickup Options for a 59/Custom Hybrid

The guitar is an Ibanez SZ520 (22-fret, set neck, mahogany body, maple cap, 25.1" scale). The acoustic tone is bright and snappy. It currently has 9s which I will defitely not be using, so I don't know how much bottom end the guitar really has acoustically.

I'm wondering what kinds of options you guys are going with besides the APHn. I'd rather go with a PGn if I were going to do the A2 thing.

Here are some ideas I'm kicking around:
59N/JazzN A5 Hybrid
Sentient
59N/JazzB A5 Hybrid
59N
A4 59N

The 3-way has 12 pins in order to split to the inner coils in the middle position, hence the 59/JazzB idea with the JazzB being the inner coil. The controls are currently stock: two B500 volumes and one A500/22n master tone, '50s wired. I'm kicking around ideas of having one master volume and a master tone, freeing up the other knob to be a spin-a-split on the neck, a bridge blend or both using a dual-concentric pot, only active in the middle position; with the bridge being split to the inner Custom slug coil in all middle position scenarios. I do like the sound of two full humbuckers combined, too, however.

I like being able to have single notes sing with the neck under gain without any significant drop in saturation than they are with the bridge. For this reason I don't see the JazzN as being a viable option. I'm also reluctant to go with an A4 59N for fear that it will be too weak and would also prefer a deeper clean tone. Regarding the 59N, I didn't like the HB-101N (59N) in my SZ320 because it was too boomy relative to the other positions clean; and it simply didn't work all that well in the inner-coil configuration with the D/I HB-103B (double screw JB+) for obvious reasons. I've decided to entertain the 59N this time around because the 59/Custom is clearly a better match with stock wiring.

I threw the 59N/JazzN hybrid out there because it was a long-time forum favorite. Hopefully the Sentient is the same or better as I would rather save time and money by not having to make the hybrid (though I will make the 59N/JazzB if it has the potential to be the most promising).

Thanks.

Maybe if I put a RUA5 in the bridge to soften the highs and even out the body, a PGn might really work out well. I normally want more highs in my pick attack from the neck pickup, though.

Are there any DiMarzio recommendations in the medium output range that are known to balance well with the 59/Custom?

What kind of music are you playing?

Re: HB Neck Pickup Options for a 59/Custom Hybrid

Hard rock/fusion/shred

Screamin 'Demon and other all-screw neck pickups are pretty popular for shred. Some people liked PGn hybrids opposite the '59/C, too.

IIRC, '59n/Jazz neck hybrid was the most common choice, though.

59N/JazzN A5 Hybrid

That is the correct answer.

I've thought about making one of these...

For anyone that has, do you have any thoughts on the different screw/slug combinations? The choice here isn't as obvious as making a 59/C Hybrid.

I have an A4 59n paired with a UOA5 JB in a mahogany set neck Shecter Blackjack tuned to C. I don't think that it's weak at all.

I love the Demon as a neck pickup. I haven't used the Sentient but it's been described as falling in between the 59N and JazzN so it seems pretty in line with what you want. For bright neck tone another possibility might be the Full Shred neck.

And +1 on rough UA5 for the Hybrid at your bridge.

I put an RC UOA5 or A2 in my bridge hybrids, as they're pretty bright otherwise. Not only does it take off excess highs, it adds some mids, dials down the low end of an A5, and adds a lot of rich texture. PGN's are on the warm side, too warm for my tastes. I'd go with an A4 '59N, shouldn't be too weak (A4's have more energy than A2's). I'd also recommend wiring the neck for spin-a-split so you can dial easily dial how much treble & volume you want.

If you're thinking of a neck hybrid, I make them using two PAF coils, a bridge coil & a neck coil, like a '59B/'59N hybrid, or a SethB/'59N, '59B/A2PN, etc. Because of the difference in resistance from the unbalanced coils you can use a warm magnet and still have a sharper high end than a '59N, even tough it technically has a higher resistance than a straight '59N. Since PU makers won't divulge any specifics about their winds, we have no idea how similar or dissimilar they are, so I go by resistance in selecting hybrid coils. If there's enough difference in the coil's resistance, you'll get some single coil tone coming thru, which is more clarity, high end & less mids. That's what I want in a neck HB.

I've made neck hybrids before, so I hear where you're coming from.

Re: HB Neck Pickup Options for a 59/Custom Hybrid

Well - straight up 59 is an obvious and great choice.

A pearly Gates would be cool too - but for you I think 59.

And once the 59 is in, you can try an A2, A4, or UOA5 or whatever at a buck a pop....

Whole Lotta neck is in the family of a 59 / Pearly, smoother top end, has some push. Can't speak to using it in a super strat, but I'm throwing it out there because I didn't see it mentioned.

You could also wire any of the previous neck suggestions in parallel to even out the low end.

Thanks for all the replies so far! It looks like I have to try a few things. WLH looks very tempting, as do a few others.

Speaking of, have you tried it with the SH-6N you got?

I haven't yet myself, but am curious. I've currently have a 47n in series to help tame the boom.

As a matter of fact I have. I have it in my Ibanez paired with an Alternative 8 in the bridge. I also swapped the Filister screws for hex heads.
