HBD Verdine White (Earth Wind & Fire)

ginormous

Understatmentologist
Earth, Wind & Fire has had various drummers over the years, a multitude of guitarists, and a slew of horn players...

but since their first album, they've only had one bassist.

Born July 25, 1951, Chicago Illinois USA; younger brother to group founder Maurice (and one of the 'various' drummers, Fred).
Clasically trained on the double bass in his youth by a member of the Chicago Symphony,
he claims James Jamerson, Paul McCartney and classical & jazz bassist Gary Karr as his primary influences.
Verdine also took electric lessons from fellow EW&F member Louis Satterfield,
a multi-instrumentalist who was trombonist in the group's acclaimed Phoenix Horns brass section.

Often imitated. Rarely bettered.

Re: HBD Verdine White (Earth Wind & Fire)

As a sideman and producer, he's done some really cool projects:

(co-produced with EW&F keyboardist Larry Dunn)

(bassist)

His main axe is a Jazz, although he's played Sadowsky, Spector, Peavey, Yamaha and Ibby's over the years.

I've watched Verdine in concert and met him back stage. He's truly in love with music and performance. Unending energy and skill. Very humble. I have a pic standing with him (and my office staff), George Johnson and Philip Baily back stage after a concert......framed and displayed in my office. I asked him about his favorite bass and he kind of laughed it off and said "I have a lot of basses!"
