Headphones?

What headphones do you use for tracking? How much did you spend? Which model would get your vote in the sub-$50 range?

EDIT:

A) I'm aware of the limitations of Headphones, for any of a number of applications. That's not what this thread is about.

B) I'm aware that nearly every headphone model that *I* have ever had good luck using (in the applications for which headphones are well suited) have been priced in the $80-$200 range. Those models are not what this thread is about.

C) This thread is about headphones that cost $50 or less. If someone put a gun to your head and gave you ONLY $50, what headphones would you buy?

I use Nady Audio 099-HQ I think there were like $40ish at Musiciansfriend. I like them... they work perfect for me.

I suppose this is kind of useless advice considering you are on a budget, but from experience I would say one thing: don't go cheap on headphones for studio applications, I for one learnt this the hard way. :smack: If you buy cheap headphones they are impossible to mix with accurately because of poor clarity and certain frequencies being over-emphasized. Similarly when laying down tracks you get a poor representation of what is going on, and it was frustrating for me when starting out at home because I was running a Pod and thought I had a certain sound dialed in, but when I listened to my mix on decent monitors or even a home stereo I discovered that my mix sounded nothing like what I thought it did.

Now I swear by AKG K-240 (the "Monitor" set, while louder the "Studio" over-emphasize low frequencies a bit) for studio applications, but at $100 US they are outside the price range you gave... My suggestion would be if you have a local music store with a recording/sound reinforcement department, go and try out a variety of phones. Bring a CD with a variety of tracks you're familiar with (in terms of mixing and production) and try the different options in your price range, and also make sure they're comfortable, another thing I learnt the hard way.

I really like my sennheiser 280pros. IMHO it's worth it spend a bit extra for that type of thing. They work very well for fine tuning a mix and monitoring. My only real complaint is the coiled chord which makes it nearly impossible to record more than 6 feet or so from the computer. You could replace that pretty easily though. At just under a hundred bucks it's a steal.
