Heaviest Pickup Available?!!?!?

The problem here is, some of us are equating "heaviest" with "highest output" and some are not. Really, why does output matter in a pickup? You can throw a clean boost pedal (or onboard preamp) on ANY old PAF knockoff and it'll SMOKE the loudest passive pup you can buy. So I guess the question is, "do you feel that you MUST get your tone from *guitar straight to amp*?"
If straight into the amp dosent work for you, it dosent work for you. My feeling is, if you cant get the tone you are looking for straight through the amp, you need a better amp and or pickups! I just really dislike pedals and such for myself though some folks get good tone with them!

Output isnt everything either. An EMG 81 has more output than a Duncan Invader or other Duncans but, I dont personally think its sounds heavier to me. To me the Invader has alot heavier sound! You mentioned the clean boost, the author of the thread wasnt asking "which clean boost should I use with my knock off PAF to sound very heavy with! I was personally giving him an answer to the question that he asked that would suit his wants! And from the question that he asked, I seiously dont think he will be at all happy with a JB or a CC!

I think if you are looking for beef go Invader/hotstack/hotrail I think passive pickups will give you more low end and middles than active. Especially with basswood. also, passive just sound better.

OK, but plenty of top notch players who are well respected for ears & tone, with the bucks to buy any guitar, amp, & pickup they want disagree with you. Of course, many similar guitarists DO agree with you. All *I'M* saying is, does the POSTER agree with you? I mean, if he's open to getting extra gain from pedals, then the Invader shines less. If he has a secondary desire for decent clean tones, IMO the Invader shines very little.

Heaviest pup available? When it has to be an active set like EMG you MUST try the SD Livewire Metal!! And the SC's have to be Livewire Hot. Once I've had a Livewire (Classic) set in my Ibanez (not basswood) and they have lots of dynamics, like passive pups have. EMG's have IMO lack of dynamics. Livewires do run on 18V, so you need enough space in your cavity.

A very nice and heavy passive pup is the Schaller Hot Stuff.
