Heavy Metal distortion pedal

i'm looking for a pedal which has a real metal type of distortion. i mean the distorted sound Metallica deliver on the Black album, Load and Re-load era. Not Randy Rhoads, not Van Halen, not KISS, not Nu Metal, not industrial, not doom etc. i have enough distortion pedals to cover blues, funk, hard rock, alternative, stoner, '60s, '70s, '80s etc. i just need straight, in-your-face metal sounds. any suggestion would be very welcomed!...

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

I will vote for the unfortunately named Boss MetalCore.
...not the Metal "Zone" -- but the Metal "Core". Don't let the name throw ya. It's not just for dropped Q metalcore. It's for straight up, one way ticket to midnight heavy metal. Ratt to Pantera to Decapitated. Whereas the MetalZone is just Pantera. I'll make a gentleman's wager with ya it's exactly what you want. (I've not tried the mentioned Metal Muff, but I've "heard" from people the same thing about that one, too.)

MetalCore into a spanky clean Fender Twin? Met. ULL.

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

How's that new Duncan Twin Tube? The "metal" one with 3-band EQ?

Anyone try it?

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

I recently picked up a Krank pedal because a bro on another forum recommended it. There is a short clip that I did with a stock Les Paul standard on my clip site. It's kinda low gain so you don't get to hear all the distortion it's got but there is enough gain to be had with it.

It has a 3 band eq. It works great. It also sounds best with the gain full on and a mid dip eq. Also the level control is very effective. Using it you can get some nice mild gain sounds. Check it when you have a sec.

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

i have tried the Boss ML-2 and it's very trebly and fizzy IMO (it can do Metallica, but only their first 3 albums era). of the Boss distortion pedals the one that is closer to what i'm lookin' for is the MD-2, but still not exactly- maybe it's more nu-metal oriented. i've heard some clips of the Metal Muff which i liked, but the reviews are mixed and confusin' and about the same is for Silver Dragon. S.S.S., the recording with the Krank sounds very lo-fi, so i can only imagine of it's qualities...

Granted the recording was bad. I recorded that with a Les Paul standard within 1 hr of buying the pedal. I"m sure it can be dialed in better! All you can do is try the pedal for yourself. If none of them suits you then maybe you need to get a Keeley modded pedal.

? what amp and guitar did you try it with. something with gain dialed in already? that will change the answers and advice. what amp and guitar do you regularly play. something with a lot of headroom? if so then the Metal Core will work great.

without knowing guitars and amps we're dealing with a small part of the equation in trying to answer.

Gibson Les Paul->Metal Core-> Fender Twin = very very good metal sound.

Thanks jerryg! I'm my own biggest critic but it's nice to hear good things sometimes. Hopefully the lessons w Rusty Cooley will pay some dividends in the future!

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

one of my fav metal style pedal is a Dano Fab Tone.... but it is reall a fuzz... it has so much bottom end to it it's amazing.... like most pedals it works with some amps and not others...

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

Of the various Boss metal distortions, the RockTron Zombie, and the Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff, I like the Boss MD-2 the best. It has such a wide range of overdrive and distortion tones, and the 2 EQ knobs allow it to match up well with any of my solid state and tube amps.

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

Not trying to sound flip, but have you tried combining the pedals you already have? I'm no expert with various distortion/overdrive/fuzz/clipsignal pedals, but if I possessed all those pedals I'd chain some of them up and see what works. Who knows, you might come up with something interesting.

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

What kind of amp and guitar are you using? I mean if you can't get a decent metal distortion with all these effect pedals you've got then maybe you're just..........................not metal?

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

i use 6 guitars (strats, lp, tele, hybrids). i have 3 amps: Laney LC-15R (bought a week ago), Epi Valve Jr. (v3) and Vox AD-30VT. i didn't said i can't get heavy sounds... the T-Rex Bloody Mary is very heavy, but it's for stoner, fuzzy, bass-heavy styles and the Marshall BB-2, Digitech Crossroads give me the '70s Marshall grid. i just can't reach the sound i've described above.

Re: Heavy Metal distortion pedal

Mesa Boogie V-twin pedal

Pricey but works great for getting those Dual Recto sounds
