Help appraising this guitar

OK sorry in advance for no pics... I don't own the guitar but will get pics as soon as I can.

A buddy at work casually asked me if I knew where he could get a guitar appraised. I asked what he had. He says his mom is in a retirement home and money is running short so they need to sell some of her gear from when she played music in the 60s. He goes on to say he has a Fender Paisley telecaster barely played that's been in a case under her bed for forty years. I thought to myself "I'm sure you don't" but sure enough he brought it in for me to check it out.

Its def an authentic 1968 Paisley.
Crazy good condition... No fret wear, glossy neck, not a scratch. The body does have a large crack and some smaller ones right on the front but no dings and stuff around the body other than that. Light scratching on the otherwise perfect hardware.

This guitar has the original case, the original extra set of strings, the original sales receipt for 147 dollars, the original documentation, strap, price tag, every damn thing it could have.

The one other curve ball here is that she had the neck customized by fender to have a much slimmer profile. I don't have any idea how this affects the value.

So if you are up to it I'd like to know everyone's opinions on this. Where could I help him sell this? Estimates on value would be appreciated and it would help out an old musician who is in need. We will all be there one day.

Finally he also has a 1965 fender deluxe reverb sitting around with it though I'm not sure the value of those.

Thanks guys

That stuff should go well at auction.

A shrinkage crack between the poly coat and the Paisley sheet is not unheard of. It should be manageable. A split in the wood is a different matter.

Supporting evidence for the neck reprofiling work would help greatly.

The amp is sure to sell.

Yes. Very sorry for the lack of photos and paperwork on the neck reprofiling. I had a very limited amount of time to look at it as I was on shift. I will come back with more info asap. I do believe they have all of this documentation. Also this is surely not a crack in the wood and deginitely not from being hit or bumped. Ive seen them selling for around 10-15k but I know the value has gone down in recent years. I'm hoping the condition and extras will push it to the higher end of the price range. Thanks for your input!

That is friggin' awesome!

In this neck of the woods, Norman's Rare Guitars provides an appraisal service. I'm sure that they can do this over the Internet if they are provided with high quality photos. The "extras" will certainly increase the demand for this guitar. If the factory neck modification is somehow documented, that would be great too...unless it was done as the guitar was being built, not after the fact, in which case there would be no documentation.

The Deluxe Reverb is pretty valuable too. See if you can take that as a commission for selling the Paisley for them. ;)

Re: Help appraising this guitar

Gruhn's guitars in Nashville provides appraisal services, and Mandolin Bros. on Staten Island does too. You can always check out the Vintage Guitar Price Guide.

The paisley part is basically wallpaper, and they will sometimes separate.

Nice pieces, I would love to have them.

Re: Help appraising this guitar

whatever you do don't bring it to guitarcenter they only give you half of what they will sell it for

Re: Help appraising this guitar

Are you 100% it's not a really good fake? That almost seems too perfect!!!p If it is this probably isn't the best way to get it apprised, it would be a item you would need help to sell so a reputable dealer could give you a estimate but you're still talking + or - thousands of dollars depending on who's there & wants it the most???

Re: Help appraising this guitar

Have you been to Pittsburgh Guitars yet, or is this a fact-finding mission so you don't get bent over?

Entirely agree about GC, although I don't think they're in the financial position to pay decent prices these days anyway.

Re: Help appraising this guitar

Only thoughts on the auction–some charge a crazy percentage such as 25%, only say that as a suggestion to make sure they are aware of the pricing involved in an auction...sorry to hear about the money running dry for the nursing home.
