Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

After I swap the magnet.

I don't recall this happening tome while doing a mag swap so I have no idea what has gone wrong.

I did a swap with the neck pup and everything went fine. Tested and it works.

The only thing that I did different between the two is that I messed up with the screws of the base plate: First, I took them off before getting the pup out of the cover (Yeah, I know...:sigh:), So the plate came out on its own... Than putting back the pup in the cover, forgot to screw the plate back and therefore did it at the end. Pretty daft but I don't think it damaged anything, or it least it didn't look like it did.

Any advice?

Cheers

Re: Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

Well the start and end leads of each coil are at one end of the magnet and so is the ground wire that goes to the base plate. My guess would be the ground is off or the leads came apart. You'll to get back in there with your meter to find out for sure.

Re: Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

Test the leads of the bridge pickup with a multi-meter. It's possible you broke a lead or a coil winding.

Re: Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

Allright! I opened up the pup again. Haven't taken the multi-meter yet but looking at the pup the only that' odd is a little piece of bare wire that fell out of the pup and I removed the base plate. I can't see where this one is coming from and the only thing I can think of is that it would have link the coil to the plate (should they be linked?). I checked the spare pups I have from Gibson and it doesn't have any wire making such connection.

So I took a pic of the wire, see link below (left hand side of the pic). Could anybody tell me where it comes from? Could it be the reason of my problem?

Pup disaster pic

As you might see as well, there is a fair amount of wax in the pup (home made job), but it was already like this before the mag swap so I don't see why it would be a problem now...But then you never know unless you do fully understand what you are doing!

Re: Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

Sorry folks, re-reading your threads I realise that it is indeed the ground wire that came off. Now, How do I fix it?

Re: Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

Its soldered to the baseplate. Look for the leftover solder on the plate, then resolder it. Be carefull it should be soldered tightly the side, in order to have enough room for the bobbins to lay flat on the plate. Then set the screw, then reheat with a hair dryer until the wax is soft, retighten the screws then solder the cover on.

Thanks Hamerfan, But what do I do with the other end of the wire, it is not connected to the pup anymore. What part of the pup should it be soldered to?

Re: Help! Bridge pup gone silent...

Allright, allright!

Nothing better than a stupid mistake to teach you a lesson... on pickup in this occurance.

The thingy that came out of the pup must have been coming from somewhere else. After unplugging the pup from the guitar, I managed to take a better look and found the piece of wire coming out of the bobbin that was disconnected from the base plate. Took out the soldering iron and it sorted out now.

I just did a quick test with the strings from the Gibby to check the signal goes through before closing everything again.

So it seems a wee review of '59 set with A8 mag in a LP is overdue... should arrive soon.
