help choosing a pickup please.

Hi, i would like a new bridge humbucker for my dean z79, mahogany body with maple top, set neck, rosewood fretboard, thru body stringing.

the one in there is a stock dean pickup and its a little weak, fizzy and boring.

I play a lot of metal, both modern and older. i also like warmer vintage tubey overdrive styles.

I want something punchy and fairly aggressive. but also something that can sound smooth and sing. great cleans from the bridge pickup are not essential to me. i was thinking of going alnico 5 or 2 rather than ceramic to help round of the top end sizzle.
I think a pickup with a flat eq may be good but not sure.

my amp is a cube 30x.

any ideas?

also a neck pickup suggestion to go with the bridge would be good.

Re: help choosing a pickup please.

Custom series humbuckers are sweet. Medium-output, y'know, hot enough to rock with but cool enough to have a very vintage flavor to them.

Re: help choosing a pickup please.

I have a V79 myself. I found when I switched out the stock pickups that their output was much higher than I initially thought. I put in a SD high output bridge pickup and when I switched to neck pickup the output would very noticeably increase. Just keep that in mind.

Eventually I had both pickups in... it was a set of Full Shreds. It sounded very cool (fat, chunky, smooth) in that guitar, and the middle position made a lovely clean tone.

'59 in the neck for old metal

aaaand i dunno about new metal so listen to everyone else on that one

Re: help choosing a pickup please.

evo bridge and neck set with coil splits. INCREDIBLY versatile set i once had in an old mahogany ML. i could get everything from a modern metal crunch, to a smooth fluid lead sound, and then when you split 'em you get great full cleans. really great set.

I would do this (call me crazy, but worth a shot)

Put a Brobucker in the neck and a Custom Custom in the bridge. The 10k neck and the 14.4k bridge will give the best of all worlds old and new

Eh, custom custom for metal isn't so hot. Of the pickups i've tried, i'd go with a custom 8, it has a tighter low end than the custom 5.

Honestly, that sounds like a good old JB for the bridge.
