Help choosing Antiquities for my Strat

Re: Help choosing Antiquities for my Strat

The Surf set has a bit more low end than the Texas Hots, so they do a little better in palm muting. As far as Antiquities go, I'd go with the Surf set with the Custom bridge.

I think you'd get pretty close to that sound in the video. The sound in the video is a little more traditional than most "metal" tones and I like that approach... the Surfs will definitely get you there.

I would split the difference between the two previous suggestions. STK-10B YJM Fury (bridge position), Ant II Surfers (middle and neck positions). No coil splitting on the bridge/middle pickup combination.

Re: Help choosing Antiquities for my Strat

I have the Texas Hots in a couple of G&L Legacy guitars, with the RW/RP middle and the TH Custom Bridge. I can't really recommend a pickup, but I can say that I don't think the TH Antiquity is what you want. The TH is dark and warm, and in some ways reminds me of a P-90 at times. It is terrific for blues and warm enough for jazz. For Nile Rodgers' Chic rhythm clicks, I'd choose on of my stock Legacys that have either the Duncan SSL-2 or the CLF-100s. I love the TH Ants, but sometimes I prefer the brighter tone of the stock pickups. I owned a vintage 1960 Strat for many years, and it's tone was closer to the SSL-2/CLF-100 side. If I want that string separation and edge, that's what I would go with.

The G&L MFD single coil they put on their S-500 is and even better choice for this. Very, VERY hot and powerful, yet it keeps that wide range frequency response--it doesn't get all mushy like most hot pickups do. Not for everyman, not for those looking for vintage tone; they can get edgy in some rigs. I really like these with the high-gain settings of my Mesa amps.

And actually, I like the idea of the N+M Surfers with the Custom Bridge. I think that would be a nice combo.
