HELP!! Eruption Tapping

Re: HELP!! Eruption Tapping

first, lose the nonsense.

and as for the slowing down. just keep practicing over and over get those fingers in shape. guitar is not a natural human function and is very tiring on the small muscles inside your fingers. one of those spring-loaded finger grippers would allow you to build up finger strength when you can't have a guitar with you, but i have never used one and it may not be worth the money.

try to make sure that you are breathing during the fast runs, and watch evh on youtube a few times to see how he manages to stay so calm.

way back when, they used to use drugs to block out the "tired reflex", but i think you should avoid those for obvious reasons. :chairfall

I know this is a little old, but I want to add a bit to it.

Firstly, I have to respectfully disagree with kneadmomunny. The drugs are great :chairfall

Seriously, what I actually disagree with is strength building. Tapping and other legato techniques in particular are not about building finger strength, they're about building finger precision while decreasing tension.

Although we're indoctrinated to fret a note right behind the actual fret, when hammering on, I would recommend that you hit the string about 1/4 inch or so behind the fret. It gives you a little more room to set it ringing properly. Secondly, make sure that you're hitting the string accurately with your finger-tip each time, and in the same place. Imagine that you're trying to hammer on with the tip of the bone in your finger, rather than the flesh.

Also, work on making your pull-offs as economical as possible, but make sure you pulling off and away from the string to set it ringing, rather than just lifting your finger up. It's something you can get away with at high speed, but it's not a good habit.

Re: HELP!! Eruption Tapping

Just continue to play at the speed you are comfortable with. There's no point trying to keep up if you can't. You can do more damage to your hand in the long run that way. Keep practicing and be patient. It's not a marathon. ;)

The "Grip Master" that has been referred to is a good little device for working out the fingers. I have one and use it occasionally for a little bit on and off. It does help some, it has me anyway. But the finger strength comes in handy with bending and heavy fret hand vibrato.
