Help - hardly any volume!

Hey guys,

I plugged into my Laney VC50 today and the volume was incredibly low. As in I had to turn this 50W 2x12 up to full to hear anything coming out of the speakers over the sound of my strings.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is/how to fix it?

Re: Help - hardly any volume!

tubes are always a good place to start. Always worth having a spare set anyway. If it turn out to be something else, you have not wasted your money.

Re: Help - hardly any volume!

So we're talking a complete re-tube here? not just power tubes/preamp tubes? Sorry, bit of an amp noob...

Re: Help - hardly any volume!

Start with the power tubes. The fact that you are getting some sound suggests you pre-amp tubes are working.

Re: Help - hardly any volume!

OK thanks, I'll give that a try. I have to say I was a bit daunted at the prospect of having to replace all 8 tubes at ~£10 each...

Re: Help - hardly any volume!

Well I'm not quite sure what I've done to it, but the amp now works fine... I did unplug the speaker cab and then plug it back in again so that might have been something to do with it... Thanks for the help though

Re: Help - hardly any volume!

If your amp has an effects loop you may need to clean the send / return jacks with some contact cleaner. I had a similar problem last week with my Hurricane, sprayed some WD40 (didn't have anything else) onto a jack and pushed it in and out a few times and it seems to have done the trick.

Some type of contact cleaner on the speaker jacks and effects loop Gingrel.

You are going to need an extra set of known-good tubes at some point in time. It is pretty much a must-have.

So I take it the neighbors two towns away can hear that amp again? :)

I don't ever use the effects loop, but i guess some contact cleaner couldn't hurt.

The only problem with getting a complete set of new tubes is they cost money and i'm a student. The amp doesn't get used during term-time anyway, coz its too heavy to take up there on the train. Might leave that till the summer at least...

But yes, the neighbours two towns away can hear it, or at least they could if i turned the volume above 1...
