Help Help! Fuse Problem!!!!

My amp went out on me last nite. I freaked out at first lol, but it was rehearsal. I get back and on a whim tried a 3AMP fuse I had lying around and boom, my amp works again.

I went out to Radio Shack and got a .5 AMP fuse that was the RECOMMENDED value. Well, the amp doesn't work! AHHHH! YET, IT WORKS WITH THE 3AMP FUSE????? HOW IS THIS??????

I have tried more than one new fuse. I am very lost here. VERY LOST!

Please advise?

Forgive me if this is fairly obvious, O, but have you tried more than just the one 5 amp fuse? Could it be that you were sold a defective/bad fuse?

Or it could be that the .5 amp fuse blew as soon as the amp was turned on. The 3 amp fuse could be surviving because it can handle the excessive juice. If that happened, get it in to the shop. There's other problems besides the fuse going.

I can't understand
I have had the amp cooking for a while on a 3AMP and it sounds great.

I tried more than a few fuses Erik, so I am pretty positive it isn't just one fuse.

Do the new .5 amp fuses look blown? Are they the exact same thing? If the original was a slo-blow, make sure it's replaced with a slo-blow. If the amp calls for a .5 amp slo-blow fuse, use only a .5 amp slo-blow fuse, nothing else.

It's never recommended to put a higher rated fuse in place of what is supposed to be there. The whole purpose of a fuse is to protect from excessive current. Putting a 3 amp fuse in there is allowing more than .5 amps of current through to where it shouldn't be. You could be doing more harm than you actually want to deal with.

You know what? It might not have been a Slo BLO

I am gonna go buy a stash of fuses.

Freaked me out.

I figure there was a power spike at the rehearsal place. It was the first time I have used this with a ****ty cab (at the place) and did NOT bring my rack with Furman, etc

That circuit isn't designed for a 3amp fuse. It is heating up the circuit somewhere else, and is a hazard if you are turning it on.

You also want those to be slow-blow fuses.

And make sure they're slo-blow.

Before this next project takes off, I'm getting a Furman power conditioner, if anything for the sound system rack. I'll get one of those 6-plug Furman blocks for my guitar setup. They protect and filter and I have an outlet checker (a must have) to make sure outlets are wired correctly before plugging in.

I got another fuse

Works fine now. I have a STRONG feeling it was the rehearsal place. Cranked amp, bad cab - who knows what happened. I usually bring my combo for the Shiva so I can trust my speakers. I have a feeling it was a power spike. I spent the rest of the nite thru a Randall Solid State - no clean channel - fun times!

From now on I bring my PowerBlock and my Furman. That was the first time in a long time I didn't use the Furman. I thought of removing it from my rig thinking C'mon How Bad Can a Power Spike Be? I went years without ever owning a Furman. I think I got my answer!

I think I got a bad batch of fuses as well. The amp has cooked fine for a while.

Hey I am not new here, I am new on TGP. I wanted a less self-egrandising name. I am glam enough as it is.

PS - no comments here exc that I love Slow Blow's, as long as it isn't my amp doing the blowing. I am sure many in here will agree.

I was just picking on you OM.

I am on many forums, and find others from here on other forums, and not just guitar forums. It's fine.

Back to the fuses. I find it is better to find the proper fuse in the manual as a previous owner may have just stuck something in there that worked. I have seen gum wrappers in odd spots.

PS. There is not "tongue test" for wall sockets, so if someone tells you that, they are putting you on. j/k
