What do you guys recommend???

Somebody says that something is good, the other guy says its not...
I really cant make up my mind...

Please...Tell me what do you recommend for blues(blues/rock), classic rock, jazz and shreding...For a LP Studio?????
I need traditional tones as much as i need modern ones...

HEEEEEEEEEELP!!!

Re: Help Help Help Help............

find out whatever pups Gary Moore uses in his LP. His tone rocks.

Re: Help Help Help Help............

A set of 59s in a LP can do anything. Other options may ultimately work better for any given guitar and use, but if I had to buy one set of pickups for an unknown Gibson without being able to swap them, it'd be 59s. Jack of all trades pickups, IME.

Re: Help Help Help Help............

Yeah . . . 59's is a great place to start the Duncan journey. And they can always be tweaked, traded and/or sold if they don't quite fill the bill for you.

Re: Help Help Help Help............

Ahm, I'd say use the neck for the bluesy/jazzy stuff and the bridge for the shredding stuff.

With that out of the way I'd go with either Jazz or 59 on the neck and probably a JB or a Custom for the bridge.

If you want less of an aggressiveness out of the pickups (because you get what you want from the Amp/effects) then perhaps also consider the Seth Lover for the neck and George Lynch's Screamin' Deamon for the bridge.

EDIT:Hey, what do you know, the Tone Wizard agrees with me :p

I heard that jazz is not jazzy...
And 59 is lifeless...
And APh is too dark for a LP...

Custom is my last choice for the bridge though...

Re: Help Help Help Help............

What you probably heard for the Jazz is that: "it's not only great for jazz, but also country, blues, funk, classic rock and heavy rock." which is right, it's great for jazz but it's not just for jazz. On a (Mahogany w/ Quilted Maple top) Schecter C-1 Classic I got many a good tone with it.
That same guitar had the JB at the bridge (which sounded a bit warmer than usual but nothing the EQ on the Amp couldn't fix.)
The 59 lifeless? Somebody needs a good whooping for not only spreading lies for an excellent pickup but what's more for not knowing how to use it either :p

Which is APh? Did you mean the Alnico II Pro or Pearly Gates? Because the two of them make a great set (the A2P at the neck and the PG at the bridge) but it's not what you asked.

In the end, if it were me I'd probably go with the Custom for the bridge and 59 for the neck, the Jazz and JB being a VERY close second, after all, they're not Seymour's favorite combo for nothing ;)

Re: Help Help Help Help............

Dude, if the contrasting opinions of people bother you, just use the Tone Wizard and be done with it :D

59+Custom
Thanks KeeperOS...

What do you guys think???

Re: Help Help Help Help............

If it's a les paul, and you like the sound of the '59, the custom 5 is supposed to be most like the '59, and may match up better. But I haven't heard anybody complain about either the '59 or custom in an lp. I have a les paul studio, and the pearly gates for the neck is a fantastic pickup as well... although I like it with A3 more than I liked it with A2. As for the bridge, i've got a 59/custom that sounds fanastic as well, with 50's wiring, it's not muddy at all, just fat and smooth, like a les paul should be. In between sounds are great as well, and I have it wired for series parallel. Lots of options and some great sounds. Does blues and rock with equal aplomb, and can do jazz in a pinch with the right amp.

Re: Help Help Help Help............

What's so great about the Custom series is that they all are the same pickup with different magnets (the Custom has a ceramic magnet, the Custom Custom an AlNiCo 2 and the Custom 5 an AlNiCo 5) so if it isn't right for you just swap magnets and you have another Seymour Duncan pickup!!!

(BTW, another popular among the forum brothers is the unofficial Custom 8 which is a Custom with an AlNiCo 8 magnet, I hear it's great too, sth between the Custom and Custom 5 if memory serves me well)

Re: Help Help Help Help............

I have been digging the Dimarzio Norton lately, it works wonders in a mahogany guitar.

HAHA you decide, then you ask what we think? :D Just decide and leave it alone! :D

For what it's worth, I went through this too.

Re: Help Help Help Help............

I'm thinking he reason you're getting conflicting advice is that you put some fairly conflicting requests in your requirements list. The perfect shredder might not be a decent blueser. I love the Alnico II Pro's which are great for blues to be sure, and very smooth in an LP neck where they could do nice jazz. Consider that Slash of GNR and Velvet Revolver fame also tosses them in his LPs, and you'd have to think they can shredd too. In any case, I'd say something from the vintage 'bucker rack will be most versitile.

Just my opinion: if he wants something that versatile, I think you're right. He could also, however, try the Hot Rodded combo. That's what happened to me: lots of conflicting advice, so I checked out the Tone Wizard. It recommended '59/Jazz and Custom/JB on almost everything for my axe, so since the Hot Rodded Combo was cheaper as a set, I got that.

Re: Help Help Help Help............

If you go with the Custom, have an A5 and A4 magnet handy, as the Custom has a ceramic magnet that many of us don't like because it's bright & sterile, By putting an A5 in a Custom, you make it a C5, which to me, is what you ought to be getting instead. I've tried a number of ceramic magnet PU's & every one was awful (to my ears). The basic advice is: ceramic for metal (massive distortion & effects) and alnico for everything else.

BTW, the '59N is a great choice. I use it a lot & am never disappointed.
